Final Boyd thread.

Recommended Posts

Our club has had to downsize in the last few years or probably longer. We can't afford anything really above £3m-£4m for one player and we've not had that many of them either. We've also had to sell our best players when we got good bids for them. A good all round striker will cost £5m+ (and big wages) and who knows if that person would adapt to Scottish football or fit in to our style of play. The players we have are Rangers class at present as these are who we can afford and who are playing for us. I think we would all like to see a better quality of player playing for us but it's not going to happen in the near future unless our scouting (haha) system picks up a bargain (it has done in the past right enough) or some youngsters come through like Fleck has recently. Any player has their price and if someone has a good season they might be next to go for decent money. We can't even really match the Championship for wages etc it's all down to the player in the end. A decent player these days usually go to lesser teams who can pay them what we can't!

We knew what kind of player Boyd was before he signed, a proven goalscorer with not much pace or workrate, and also Miller, hard working player who certainly won't give you 20+ goals a season such as Boyd will. Both players compliment each other well and long may that continue. Why do we have to keep slagging one or the other off all the time?

Because they play the same position and my arguement is that he gets far, far more criticism than is justified. The comaparative easy ride of another player severely lacking in ability and goalscoring talent who plays the same position effectively highlights my point. Miller was the obvious choice to illustrate my arguement.

Boyd makes a great contribution to the team.

Boyd gets more criticism, mor absue and more negative threads started in his honour than:

a) He deserves.

b) Players more deserving; Ferguson, Miller, McCulloch and most the players who have failed at left midfield this season.

Why a player who we only paid £400k for, and who does his job and does it well, gets more criticism than anyone else in the squad is frankly baffling.

You might criticise them equally. Doesn't mean the online community as a whole give them their fair share of grief and I use predominantly this site to air my views.

Boyd and Miller don't play in the same position. Would you compare McCoist and Hateley's goalscoring ability? Or would you admit that both had differing roles in the team?

Can't see why Miller deserves any more criticism than Boyd. He has scored more goals than most Rangers fans thought he would, he has brought something to the team (something that I said he wouldn't at the start of the season) and has shown a desire and an attitude that others could learn from. He did lose form for a few weeks but this was down to an injury. Something that can't be levelled at Boyd, I'll give him credit where ever its due, and credit to the lad, he isn't injured very often.

McCulloch isn't everyones cup of tea, but the games he's been drafted into recently, he hasn't been the worst performer in our team. In fact, taking the games as they panned out, he as a success against both Aberbeen and Celtc.

Also, all the points you raised above about players performance and fees etc should be directed at the man who picks the team and identifies the players he wants signed.

It seems that behind almost all criticism of Boyd is a belief that he could somehow be more of a player if he would only adopt a different attitude.

Wrong, he is what he is, that's all folks. If you're going to drop him you need to say who you would put in his place - bearing in mind that you only have the current squad to choose from.

It's really that simple. Who would you play instead of Boyd? Then please explain how the team would be better off without Boyds goals this season because if there is one sure thing in all of this it's that not one of our current alternatives would have scored as many goals as Boyd.

He has proven that he can be a better player. Why should we accept a sub-standard performance without any level of criticism?

I know people who believe implicitly in intelligent design and are prepared to argue long and hard to defend it.

It makes no sense, has no foundation in fact or evidence, and is based in fairly equal measure on prejudice and ignorance. Unfortunately that won't stop them from doing everything they can to promote it.

Perhaps the critics of Boyd aren't so very different.

Or the critics of Miller. ;)

'Better' meaning what exactly? Run around more?

No, make intelligent runs that detract defenders from on-rushing midfield players (I know we don't have that at the moment either), holding up the ball, creating space for team-mates, being able to head a ball, to be able to actually run would help as he can't outpace even the most cumbersome centre-halves, controlling a ball....

All basics required to be a football player, atributes that Boyd has shown some signs of improving over the course of the season, but at times is devoid of even th most basic of the above skills.

As in any job, no matter how good you are, or how good everyone else tells you, you are, you can and should always improve.

No, the criticism of Miller is based on highly prejudicial evidence gathered over many years that he's really a very poor footballer indeed.

Plenty of 'top class' managers would disagree with your view on Miller, as would plenty other fans. Can't remember him spening much time warming the bench at any of his domestic clubs and he plays regularly for the national side (under 4 different managers).
