Sectarian Celtic fans strike again

How come it always sneaks under the radar with them? Or did I just miss it staying down here now:

Ten people were arrested, three for alleged sectarian-related breaches of the peace, at Inverness Caledonian Thistle's match against Celtic.

Northern Constabulary said those arrested were Celtic supporters.

The force praised the majority of the crowd for their behaviour during the game, which marked Terry Butcher's first game in charge of Inverness.

Sunday's 0-0 draw ended a run of league defeats for the Highlands side, who are bottom of the table.

Supt Andy Cowie said policing the match had been a significant operation.

He added: "I was very pleased with the behaviour of both sets of fans. We continued with our community-based style of policing and the supporters appeared to respond very well to that approach.

"There were a number of arrests, mainly for minor public order offences and three for the more serious offence of sectarian breach of the peace.

"As we did in the case of a supporter who was charged with a similar offence earlier in the year when Caley Thistle played Rangers, we will be applying for Football Banning Orders for these individuals."

Celtic fan who shouted sectarian slurs is banned from every ground in Scotland

Feb 3 2009 By Alistair Munro

A CELTIC fan who shouted sectarian abuse during Sunday's game at Caley Thistle has been banned from every ground in Scotland.

Paul Sloan, 28, was arrested after police heard him yelling: "F****** Orange B*******!"

Sloan appeared from custody yesterday at Inverness Sheriff Court, still wearing his Celtic top.

His lawyer, Eilidh MacDonald, said: "He feels deeply ashamed. His girlfriend is Protestant and his mother is Protestant."

Ms MacDonald said Sloan "got caught up in the spirit of the game" and had not meant to insult anyone.

She added: "He does not feel what he said was meant to be hateful but accepts it could be interpreted in that way by others."

Sloan, an engineer from Wishaw, Lanarkshire, pled guilty to racially aggravated breach of the peace. Sheriff Alexander Pollock fined him £400 and imposed a year-long Football Banning Order.

Ms MacDonald said Sloan had already missed a day's work because of his arrest and was not sure whether his conviction would affect his job.

Two other Celtic fans were arrested on Sunday and accused of racially aggravated breach of the peace.

The cases are continuing and one of the arrested men has pleaded not guilty.

Police stressed that the vast majority of fans at the game - the debut as Caley Thistle manager of former Rangers captain Terry Butcher - had been well behaved.
