WALTER SMITH has given his backing to a decision which means SPL managers will not speak about refereeing decisions in post-match interviews.

A number of top-flight bosses met recently as part of a working group and when they gathered, the idea was promoted and agreed on.

Walter Smith and referee Eddie SmithPremier League officials released a statement this morning announcing the new initiative, which takes immediate effect.

And Smith maintains he is in full support of the scheme, despite having disagreements with officials himself in the past.

The Rangers manager said: "As part of the group that met with the SPL, I agree with what has been decided and it's a step forward.

"It is a show of intent from managers and an acceptance that too many headlines are being made because we are maybe a little bit too critical of referees at times.

"That has put them under undue pressure, especially in recent months, and when the idea was brought up everyone there agreed it would be a good thing to try.

"Everybody has complaints to make every now and then and I had one myself earlier in the season.

"But I think it is worth doing this. Hopefully it takes a little bit of pressure off the officials over time.

"Managers make errors just like they do. This is an interesting development, especially as we've a young group of referees at the moment.

"We have lost a number of experienced officials over the last few seasons and I think the ones coming through are having to learn in a tough, hostile environment at times."

Smith has walked into the trap.

FFS. This decision is ONLY going to benefit one team and we know it's not us.

I expect the manager of rangers to be able to stand up for our team, and if he is agreeeing not to do that then he should resign, no matter our league position.
