Famine Song Statement

RANGERS head of security and operations Kenny Scott said today: "It is important to be clear on the reasons behind last night's decision to put messages on the screens and scoreboards at Ibrox regarding the famine song.

"Following discussions with Strathclyde Police, it was made clear to the club that there was the potential for supporters singing this song to be arrested at last night's match.

"The decision to arrest anyone is one which is made not by the club but by the police.

"However Rangers Football Club took the decision that it was only fair to warn everyone coming to the stadium last night that this was the situation.

"We took a similar step last month when we issued 50,000 leaflets before the Motherwell match at Ibrox again advising supporters of the police position.

"We as a club do not wish to see any of our supporters leaving themselves open to arrest and believed by putting the messages on the screens and scoreboards last night we were only fulfilling our obligations to you, our supporters.

"We have another match at Ibrox on Saturday and the same message applies to that fixture as it did last night.

"For the benefit of those supporters attending the match on Saturday the club will be repeating the message that was displayed last night."

More from the club:

In a statement the club said: "We do not believe it is in the interests of fans to sing this song and we do not wish to see supporters subject to arrest.

"We do, however, share the frustration of many of our supporters who believe that all too often Rangers fans are singled out on the issue of anti-social behaviour when it is commonplace at football grounds around the country and nothing is done or said about it.

"We also hold the view that some of the public statements regarding the singing of the Famine Song have only served to inflame rather than resolve the issue. "

Strathclyde Police said the warning was issued by Rangers after the club approached them for their advice. It also said officers would continue to take action against any songs that were deemed to be racist or sectarian.

Any word on what grounds they would arrest people on?

There's an article in today's Herald claiming that the next step will be to arrest people. I'd love to see them try; the prisons are filled to bursting with minor offenders while paedophiles walk free. I can see the first ever 'famine martyrs' being created. Let them go ahead and try - the world can then see the injustice of it all while the perpetrators of the Novo hate song snigger on the sidelines.

The fans should not take this but as we know most don't/won't or can't be bothered to stand up to the people who are doing this. They just do as SDM and Bain say.

If some fans did get arrested for this do you think many would stand up for them and do something or just sit down and shut up? Sit down and shut up I would say which says it all......

I would love to see this taken through the courts as i don't really see a case for arrest. It would certainly start a dangerous trend in freedom of speech or lack of it.

What about all the pop songs where the texts are a bit dodgy are the singers going to be arrested. I doubt it, this will be another case of the police setting an example but only to Rangers fans.
