Interesting. I would imagine the Portuguese FA will nominate the next team in their league though.

Will be interesting to see if they win their appeal. If they don't then I reckon that the runners-up will be treated as Champions and therefore gain automatic entry.

Porto faces CL ban over bribery scandal

NYON, Switzerland (AP) -- FC Porto could lose its place in next season's Champions League because of a bribery scandal.

UEFA said Tuesday it is considering barring Porto after the club was deducted Portuguese league points on the way to winning the title following an investigation into bribing referees during the 2003-04 season.

As champion, Porto would skip the qualifying rounds to claim an automatic spot in the lucrative Champions League group stage. The club made at least $18 million in prize money and television deals from this season's competition by winning its group before being knocked out in the round of 16.

UEFA said it would ask its disciplinary unit to look at the case if the Portuguese league puts forward Porto as one of its three Champions League representatives on June 2.

The potential problem for Porto lies in Article 1 of the Champions League regulations. It states that a club "must not be or have been involved in any activity aimed at arranging or influencing the outcome of a match at national or international level."

But there is a precedent for exceptions. AC Milan was barred in 2006 because of an Italian corruption investigation, but won the right to play after an appeal. It went on to win the Champions League that season.

Porto was punished this month in the long-running "Golden Whistle" investigation into bribing referees in Portuguese league matches during the 2003-04 season. Porto won the title that year under coach Jose Mourinho and added a second Champions League trophy to its 1987 triumph.

It was deducted six points this month for its part in the four-year-old scandal, though it was already 20 points clear of second-place Sporting Lisbon with just one round to play. The club was also fined $235,000 by the league.

Long-serving Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa received a two-year suspension from soccer, but was dismissive about a threat to the team's Champions League place.

"I'm not losing any sleep over it," he said earlier this month. "People who are talking about (this possibility) have no credibility, they don't know the rules. The squad isn't worried because it's used to living amid this kind of suspicion."

The Portuguese league has said Porto has already been punished and that it would be putting the club's name forward.

If allowed to play, Porto will be joined by Sporting Lisbon in the group stage with Guimaraes entering at the final qualifying round. Fourth-place Benfica stands to benefit if UEFA sanctions Porto.
