Summer 2008 Transfer Rumours Thread

Recommended Posts

The other thing to take into account is the squad size as the wages don't pay themselves. So far in terms of player numbers compared to last season, we've got 3 OUT - 3 IN and it is a reasonably large squad. We might have to offload one or two players before we can bring any more in.

Yes i think you hit the nail on the head. we also have to take the wages of players into account. For one season that will run between 250.000 and 1million per player.

This will be my 200th post. I was hoping to celebrate it by hailing the arrival of a bright new signing; instead we may be getting Danny Shittu (who we don't need as has been said) and we can anticipate, according to reports, WS bringing in a defensive midfielder. Defensive! When we have Thomson, Hemdani, Dailly who can play there and Whittaker who may HAVE to play there! But - trying to be positive - we have a surfeit of strikers and no midfield to link up. Course, it could be remedied with the addition of Furman, who has been earmarked as a possible successor to Fergie. We can but hope.

Notice that Fleck is the only youngster to travel to Holland with the squad so hopefully thats a good sign.

Good for Fleck but disappointing That we only have one youth player deemed good enough to be in the first team squad.

Good sign for Fleck I assume you mean ? Not such a good sign for other youngsters such as Furman and Lennon. I am not a basher of WS and his testing of young players to be honest and, if he thinks Fleck is the only one worthy of being in the pre-season squad then so be it.

Hopefully Fleck will get a chance to shine this season but I would also like to see Furman too - when he made a subs appearance against Dundee Utd he seemed to have the drive and energy which we lacked at times last season (he is certainly green regarding positional sense - but he showed lots of signs of potential.

Couldn't comment on Lennon as I havent seen much of him.

In other news...... we are in talks with Watford over Shittu - yet ANOTHER CB - how many do we need ? Perhaps the formation next season really will be 5-0-5 - http://www.sportinglife.com/football/scottishpremier/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=soccer/08/07/12/manual_121709.html&TEAMHD=scotspremiership

I think Fleck will definitely play a bit this season, albeit as a late substitute. He's hailed as the Scottish Rooney and so it would be criminal not to try to nurture him into the team. I think Walter knows it but he'll be wary of pushing him too hard too soon.

I agree it's a shame that Furman isn't on the tour, he did look decent against DunU, although that should be tempered with the fact that he did look quite inexperienced with his positioning, and he wasn't the most composed either.

He didn't look that close to being able to walk into the team and hold down a place.

But just because he isn't on the tour doesn't mean that he won't be involved next season. He's probably on another tour with the under 19's.

As for Lennon, I think his days are numbered. We've got plenty of strikers at the moment and when it's time to put a youngster in, Fleck is bound to get the nod.

We should try him on loan for a season and if he's deemed not good enough after that, then just move him on.

If we'd loaned MacCormack to Motherwell instead of letting him go, we might have had a decent transfer fee from Cardiff.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has opinions on other young players like Kinniburgh and Efrem etc.

I'm definately of the opinion that loaning youngsters out, to try and get them a year at a decent level so we can assess how they'll do is a good idea. It goes back to the links with other clubs I've been going on about for months.

I find it funny that some people aren't happy about us looking at a centre back - I really think we need to look for a long term partner for Carlos. Weir is obviously not going to start every game, but I think is now there for back up and to rub some of his experience off on the younger defenders.

No idea how good Shittu is though.

I also think we need a left back, a right winger and a creative midfielder.

I agree with not paying over the odds for Davis and find it strange others want us to to just that, but would they do it with their own money?

I wish people would cut out the bollocks about a 6M budget, it's like listening to a bunch of Tims. You're wrong and look stupid, and I want to tell you that now, as when it's proven so you'll all pretend you didn't say any such thing.

If we have a 6M budget it means we're offering zero for Davis and Shittu and whoever else we're looking at. For the arithmetically challenged, in the long term money in has to equal money out. You cannot continually spend more money than you earn as there comes a day when you are forced to stop. Just ask Leeds and Gretna, or even Rangers fans a few years ago.

You'd think our fans would have learned and they all seem to be castigating SDM when he did it last time, so why are they now castigating him for not overspending again even though he's agreed to a pretty generous budget for the last two seasons?

Like I said, the unnecessary and unfounded negativity in this forum recently is making the place a less enjoyable one.
