RANGERS' win last night has helped ensure whoever wins next season's SPL goes directly into the group stage of the 2009/10 Champions League.

Along with the club's continued progress in Europe, this week's Champions League results and Aberdeen and Celtic's continental performances this term have also contributed.

Whoever wins the league this term should also start next season's Champions League in the group phase, with the same incentive now definitely on offer for the following competition.

The basis for UEFA's country rankings is the performance of each nation's club in European competitions over a five-year period, with points awarded for wins, draws and progression.

The list is consequently used to determine how many clubs should enter continental tournaments and at what stage.

Lex Gold, executive chairman of the SPL, said: "We wish Rangers continued success in the UEFA Cup.

"Oiur clubs' performances in European competition this season have been superb and continue to raise the standing of our game across Europe."
