I’ll have to defer to compo. Not for the first time either.

From a book he played once against Hibs but that was even before my time

Sorry, I’ve reached page 3 and have a question that may well have been asked.  Surely we know the banner content before it’s allowed in?  Or am I being dense?

It's a good question. 3 possibilities. The club didn't stop the banner being brought in, the banner was smuggled in or the banner was produced in the stadium itself. My guess would be the latter. The UBs have had access to do stuff in the stadium previously.

Club Statement | Rangers Football Club

RANGERS notes the outcome of the UEFA disciplinary case, and the respective sanctions imposed upon the club for several issues at the recent Ibrox match with Fenerbahce.

Most notably, the club has been served with a suspended closure of the Copland Stand should there be any repeat of racist and/or discriminatory behaviour within the next two years.

This punishment must serve as a severe and significant reminder to the small minority of supporters who bring the name of Rangers into disrepute. Any repeat of any discriminatory behaviour (and this also includes the singing of illicit songs) may result in the famed ‘Rangers end’ of our home being closed for a UEFA match.

Not only will the reputation and finances of the club be harmed by such a punishment, but the chances of the team in a potentially key European match will also suffer enormously, while thousands of innocent fans will be unable to attend a massive fixture.

In response to the displaying of the racist and/or discriminatory banner at the Fenerbahce game, the club can confirm that it is in the process of issuing lifetime bans to the individuals responsible.

Further, following the use of pyrotechnics at Parkhead in the Old Firm game, the club can confirm the groups responsible for their discharge will be directly impacted by the 500 ticket reduction issued as a sanction the next time the club appears in the latter stages of the Premier Sports Cup at Hampden.

The club again stresses a future use of pyrotechnics at any SPFL match may lead to a further reduction of 800 tickets at a latter-stage Premier Sports Cup match.

The strongest asset this football club has is our support, and the club knows the overwhelming majority of our supporters will be angered by these episodes and the consequences they have for the club and its supporters. We reiterate our call for all supporters to back the team in the correct manner, and to challenge those who seek to further damage the good name of Rangers.

It is long overdue that the club is taking action on the morons of the UB's who carry out these actions, although it will oviously dampen the atmosphere at games they should be disbanded by the club.

Agreed, but this sorry episode and others could have been avoided if the board had acted a lot earlier, instead the club gave these moron free range to do what they liked. Better late than never I suppose.

Some people just support the fans which U.E.F.A. agree with.

Did you write the banner?

I think that people (not, necessarily, 'The People') and fans agree with UEFA, in this instance, and not vice versa.

It matters little who agrees and who objects, because, it is UEFA's ba' and UEFA's bat, and it has set down its rules. Whether you accept them them, or not, or whether you believe its interpretation of those rules is flawed, is largely irrelevant, if you want to play....

Of course, in addition, the Club owns the stadium, and permits access to fans and others on the basis of terms and conditions, of which it is in charge. Break these strictures, and the Club is able to eject you, and/or ban you, permanently.

I am completely in the dark as to how you might set about changing UEFA's position, and its rules. Maybe you could persuade enough Ultras, and enough Clubs to mount a challenge to the rules in the Court for Arbitration in Sport. As it would be an arbitration, I assume that UEFA would have to agree to sit down at the table, which it may not wish to do. Would it have an obligation in this regard?

Would the much maligned European Court of Human Rights be interested?

I have no idea how you would get the current, or the new, 'Ibrox Power Brokers' on-side on this issue.

Good luck.
