He went South to play in the same forward line as Stanley Mathews and Stan Mortensen. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, that is brilliant. For the sake of completeness, though, you should have mentioned his Scotland caps, fourteen and goals, six. Not a lot of caps compared to modern times but international matches were fewer, the talent pool was much larger and the selectors used to dole caps out to chaps they thought deserved a chance. Dundonian Jackie Mudie was a contemporary but with a place on the pantheon of Blackpool divinity a bit lower than Matthews and Mortensen

Name dropping and bragging He was sacked as Nottingham Forest manager mid season and the guy to takeover from him was called Brian Clough. Clough couldn't initially get a tune out of the squad and took the team further down the league table, only just avoiding relegation to the third tier. Four years later they would be European Cup winners. Why the turnaround? Peter Taylor, his assistant (at Derby where they won the league) rejoined Clough in '76. Sometimes the real difference isn't always in the headlines. Who is the main tactical brain at Ibrox today? As with most successful English teams in those days, there were several prominent Scots at the club.

We should give decent game time to several of the younger players in the league. Rest regulars that have the most risky knocks or niggles.... But I doubt it will happen.
