Strangest Places Watching A Game

Recommended Posts

A friend (a member of a learned profession!) watched Hibs v Barcelona from the roof of the old Albion lemonade factory after arriving at Easter Road to find the turnstiles closed. Couldn’t have had much of a view but better than nothing.

I have no exotic experiences. I sometimes watched parts of non-league games from the roof of an old WW2 pillbox. Does that count?

I used to drive up to the Knockagh Monument war memorial to listen to Rangers games when I lived in Northern Ireland. This was before digital radio far less the internet. The memorial sits on top of a 1,200 foot hill overlooking the Co. Antrim coast towards Scotland. I discovered that not only could you pick up Radio Scotland there but West Sound radio too. I'd drive up on a Saturday afternoon and listen to the commentary.

I listened to Aberdeen play Dunfermline in a relegation play-off on top of a toilet block in Coober Pedy, a small mining town in the Australian desert. I'd met an Aberdeen fan and he had a portable tranny and the game was being broadcast on the BBC World Service. Coober Pedy is an unusual town in that everything is underground because of the heat and dust. So we needed some height to pick up the signal and that was the only building we could climb up onto. It was 7 in the morning or something too. We got some funny looks.

I moved to Holland in 1980 and at that time there was no internet as we now have. The only way I could hear a game was by radio from the BBC. The only radio I had that I could hear the game was in the car. it was an AM channel and every time it got exciting the signal seemed to disappear. I had something like "And Laudrup crosses the ball"and then crack crack crack, silence. i had to wait until the signal came back, and I could learn if the score was still the same. i remember I was sitting in the car and my neighbour came out of his house to walk the dog. Just at that moment it sounded like Rangers could score and then no signal. I was battering my hand against the dashboard in frustration. He walked past the car, looking at me as if I was mad. Sitting in the car without the engine running, having a fit. He must have thought I was off my head.

Holy Mahogany - Long long long time Pete. Hope you are doing well.

For the thread - I'm trying to think of the most bizarre, it would defo be overseas somewhere

Watched a few Rangers games in the bottom floor of a Masonic Lodge in Ottawa. Also, the manager of an Irish Pub in Orleans, Ottawa would stream our games onto the TVs for me (us).

Strangest experience was going to watch Leeds v Man U in Malta with a Leeds fans I had met. Didn't tell me it was in the Valetta Man U supporters pub until we got there. Didn't help they all had a Leeds top on.......

I'm currently in Mussoorie in the Himalayan Foothills and watched the game in a wee boozer called the Garrison.  I have watched matches in some strange places, but this topped it.  Any other crazy ones?

There for work, on holiday or some other reason?
