I always thought that if McCoist & Hateley were fit / available to play together in all the group games we'd have qualified and won it. 

 

I'm sure Ian Durrant played up front just behind Hateley against Brugge and Hateley was harshly sent off. 

 

That was our opportunity to win the big one but as per usual things conspired against us.

I'll throw the 98 Cup Final against Hearts as another which was a big downer. After not getting 10IAR winning the cup to give Walter and many of the 9IAR players a send off would have softened the blow but that defeat was horrible.

The defeat to Progres from Luxembourg was and remains the worst result in our entire history in my opinion. I was over there for the match and while I have seen far too many shambolic performances since that one, the level of opponent was ridiculously poor and they didnt even play well to beat us. I do not count the "journey" years as being the real Rangers teams so even truly awful results like Stirling, Alloa from 2-0 up in a cup SF, Raith in a final, and a couple of home losses do not beat Progres in my mind for worst ever. Losing at home to a lower league side in the Scottish Cup with the league already lost is really really bad and cannot be excused and it should cost the manager his job. If this doesnt, then there is no lower bar to go to.

I've been thinking about this and given the stakes I would say the defeats at Dundee and Ross County last season cost us the league when we could have stopped Celtic getting out of sight financially on us.  I think a decent manager would have ensured victory in both those fixtures.
