What's your worst loss on the field of play?

Was it not Kilmarnock? Ally Mitchell scored, was the 2nd May 1998. Only reason I know was because it was also my Gran's funeral too that day. Cheery stuff I know! Was also the break up of the team I had grown up idolising

You're correct, it was Killie. Don't know where I got Motherwell 😀

I think the one you are thinking of is the game before we won 9 in a row at Tannadice. We could have won at Ibrox but Motherwell won 2-0 Owen Coyle scored IIRC

Sunday was just a low in terms of quality and probably is the worst result since Hamilton in the 80s for me but I was only about 8 years old in that game so didnt really grasp it.

I think losing in Luxembourg under Pedro was also bad.

But like Cammy and Dado were saying during the 97-98 season there was a few stinkers which left you seriously down due to the end of an era. The Killie game was mentioned by prior to that we lost a midweek game at Pittodrie and earlier in the season losing the NY game at Celtic Park was depressing.

I asked my son, who is now a young man the O.P's question and he said the 2 - 0 loss to Progrès Niederkorn, without hesitation. He even looked pained when he said it. This period since demotion has been tough on the young Bluenoses, they have yet to know sustained success.

As far as the "worst" collection if results it is well up there.

There are two things that make up my "worst" losses on the field of play. One is obvious cheating by the referees against them - e.g. the last two cup finals, and various league games (e.g. Maeda fouls Cantwell in the area, the latter being wrecked for months; no penalty given; Cerny clearly being fouled in injury time of the League Cup final, no penalty given). The other is abject performances against them by people who can do much better.

We are used to people running themselves into ground for the gersey, but nowadays, with hardly a true Scottish/Glesca root in the squad, we have "mercenaries" who by default  change their loyalties every 2 or 4 years in their career. And you wonder whether they actually understand the true spirit of the club. For us, nigh every game is do or die.

While a loss to Niederkorn is hard to take, it was essentially pre-season and freak results are common. While bitter, that mauling at the hands of Liverpool was bad too, yet, the gulf in class was obvious.

Sunday wasn't amongst the worst in my living memory. It was bad because we never really performed as a team, and while missing some good chances, never put them under any sustained real pressure bar the last 10 mins. Possession stats may belie this, but we looked fully defunct as a team. This makes the result even worse.

One of the "worst" was obviously the Europa League final, as we once more put up a defensive line-up rather alien to the team that produced the actual feat to get there. Aribo as the lone striker gave me a few sleepless moments, no matter that he actually managed to score.

It's good there isn't a definitive answer to this thread, it should be a mix of misery personal to each poster.

I was at the Hamilton Accies defeat, it was a huge disappointment and big media splash but Accies were in the same division as us and we were going well in the league so that helped soften the blow.

The first game at Ibrox I took both my sons and my sister's boys too was also against Hamilton, a few seasons back. We lost to them for the first time since the cup game. It cost a fortune for us all to go, Rangers were total gash, there was nothing but anger in the stands around us, it was not the introduction to Ibrox I had planned for them. My sister's boys ended up St. Mirren fans.

The defeat to Stirling Albion when their manager was away getting married was a low point. Not only were we defeated, but it was the sheer amateurism of it all, it genuinely felt like we were a Saturday morning side playing in public parks.

I travelled to Aberdeen for the game when Durrant was on the receiving end of a career altering injury. In the days before mobile phones the guy I was meeting to get my ticket from didn't show up, there was no way of contacting him. I nearly got my head kicked in on Union Street, wasn't able to get another ticket so missed the game and ended up listening to it on a MW radio, Charlie Nicholas scoring the winner for Aberdeen. That was a miserable day.

I've seen us humped by Celtic a few times, but strangely the game that was a particular low for me was at Hampden in the cup. Advocaat was still in charge and O'Neill had joined Celtic as manager. I was living away and had travelled back to Scotland for the game. We had Reyna and Mols sent off, Celtic bullied us all over the park, Larson out-muscled Bob Malcolm for the only goal, Neil Lennon controlled the midfield and was instrumental in both sending offs and in throwing us completely off our natural game. It was a watershed moment, I knew everything was changing, Celtic weren't a flash in the pan. I'd argue that was the start of our current troubles, that night at Hampden and how we reacted to it.

The game that sticks in my craw the most is the Europa League Final in Manchester. Our defensive tactics in that game were utterly embarrasing.

We had reached the final using these tactics, and we didn't really have the personnel available to change them. Cousin was a massive loss and Darcheville wasn't that fit, from memory.

Our full backs were converted centre halves and really only had Whittaker who could add any sort of attacking threat from the midfield. We just didn't many options to go a lot more attacking.

This is a cheery thread but I remember also being heartbroken when we drew with CSKA which meant those cheating French Bastar*s went through in 1992/93 when we finished unbeaten. We should have won that competition

Although even if we'd won that game, we still wouldn't have got through. We needed to win in France and just fell short.

I also felt that we would have won the final if we'd reached it.

I loved that run. Went to Denmark, Germany and Belgium. Money ran out for the French trip.
