Referees and VAR in Scotland

Recommended Posts

It used to be the case that when VAR asked the referee to review an incident, everyone expected the referee to change their mind. No longer.

After the Walsh decision against Diomande, this week we have Robertson, in the Aberdeen game, called to review his decision and deciding not to change his decision.

I'm wondering if this is the Collum effect. Willie was known to be a tad techy when anyone questioned his decision and was one of the very few who, when called by VAR to review, stood by his original decision. Now that Willie is the main man, are Refs thinking that this is the way to impress or is it simply a coincidence?

Watch this space.

If they are going to be asked by a colleague (who is a top level referee themself) to review footage of an incident, because the VAR ref reckons the on field referee has made an error. But somehow decide to stick to a decision, it almost seems like a complete disagreement between the ref and the VAR team.

VAR is a great tool for referees. I bet there are thousands of referees in history who made bad on field calls wish they had a real time video replay to confirm or deny a decision.

If there is this continued upturn in referees in SPFL stick to on field decisions that says to me a problem with the process, or an issue between the on field ref and VAR room ref interpreting the rules differently and probably highlights why we get so much inconsistency from refs in the SPFL.

Its in Collums best interests to make sure all are aligned or he shouldn't last long in the role.
