SPFL Statement

Statement following Sunday's Premier Sports Cup Final

Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup Final was an enthralling match, filled with twists and turns. Both teams deserve huge credit for the part they played in one of the most exciting cup finals in recent memory. Celtic and Rangers put on a display of passionate, dramatic and end-to-end football, which showcased all that is best about our game.

Everyone at the SPFL would like to pass on our congratulations to the players, management and directors of Celtic on their trophy win, and we also send our commiserations to everyone connected with Rangers, who helped make it such a thrilling showpiece event.

However, the SPFL, Police Scotland and the Scottish FA have been clear that the unauthorised use of pyrotechnics is illegal and unsafe. Therefore, the disruptive displays which took place before and during Sunday’s match were completely unacceptable and again led to a delay to the start of the match.

The SPFL will liaise with Police Scotland regarding their investigations into this illegal behaviour and these events will also be considered as part of the SPFL’s ongoing disciplinary investigations into both clubs regarding the use of pyrotechnics.

The SPFL is awaiting the match delegate’s report following the game, which will also consider other matters, including the unacceptable encroachment of supporters onto the Hampden Park trackside area during and after the match.

3 games behind closed doors and hefty fine for us. Another "don't do it again" warning for them..

Might be clutching but didn't Kuhn have a wee nick on Diamonde prior to scoring their 3rd?

Seen a few people mention this. I can't remember it at the game, but I did see Propper having a go at Beaton after the goal. I'm still traumatised, so not watched it back!

Considering they chalked off our goal last season (Dessers) by looking back way into the build up, I'm surprised they didn't look at this. Or am I?

I find it hard to blame Beaton for the penalty incident. That goes on VAR.

Agreed, although it needs to be done in a clever way. It can't be seen to appear as if we're just poor losers. Celtic used ex-players in the press, plus I firmly believe that the refs are being intimidated away from the pitch by the extremist parts of their support..

The referee( Beaton) could have asked for a VAR review of the incident after he’d blown his whistle & awarded a foul.
Unless we get the audio we will not know what actually happened between the match referee & the var officials

Why did Igamane chose to pass to Cerny here?

I haven’t seen that in motion but from the still it looks the right thing to do. Cerny has a clear run at goal. The other two attackers are behind. While one of them also has a good run at goal it takes him nearer the defender. The second attacker is to the right and he would still have to get past the defender.
