The Rangers Winter 2025 Transfer Rumours and Deals - Thread

Recommended Posts

Alex McDonald scored 94 goals in 503 appearances. My memory I'd that he scored hugely important goals (cup finals, Europe etc).

If young Barron can develop into even half the player Doddie was, we'll have won a watch.

Aberdeen have published the precise numbers regarding the SPFL panel Connor Barron fee alongside their IMO valid complaints directed at the system.

Immediate fee: £639,920

Potential add-ons: £250,000

Sell on clause: 10%

I didn't realise that the panel were allowed to set add-ons and sell on clause. Has there been any other cases where they have?

Seems "weird" that the figures above are close to both what Rangers offered (£500K against immediate fee of (£640K) and what Aberdeen were looking for (circa £1M against circa £900K with add-ons plus 10% of what he is sold for).

I think Aberdeen's complaints about the system are fine.

However, this disincentivises us (and them) to sign players from other Scottish clubs on freedom of contract deals, and the players. If we were to sell Barron for 3 million in the summer (for example) we would end up paying circa 1.2 million, for a player who was out of contract and could have went a few miles south for far less. And got a nicer sign on fee and wage.

Surely there needs to be a globally standardised framework for this, which allows clubs to be adequately rewarded to bringing through young players, but allows the players and clubs to move, who are out of contract and essentially free agents. Surely these fee's contradict any freedom of movement laws that allow out of contract players to move?

I'd recommend the fee's are set depending on the signing clubs TV market share. It makes no sense that Rangers need to pay more to sign a player than Bayern, Man U, Real Madrid, Juventus etc. But I suppose the system works fine for those clubs.

A reminder we signed Joe Aribo and Charlton got a development fee or around 200k-300k

Agree, This could potentially put us off signing young Scottish players moving forward. Its cheaper to sign players who are in contract abroad like Jefte and Igamane.

Seems like a very high reward for Aberdeen. They should get 'something' for developing a player but this seems excessive.

If Alex Lowry(for example) signs for Aberdeen in the summer does that mean we get a similar package? Does this type of ruling then put the likes of Aberdeen and Hibs off from signing our ex youths?

First question: don't know

Don't think that it is weird at all. Makes sense.

What would trigger the add-ons is the missing detail that makes a big difference to the deal.

Quite a lot of money for Barron, a player we don’t need because he’s not good enough

I think its debateable, but you put forward a good point. We paid less or similar for Igamane and Jefte who were both in contract and much better players.

Therefore the behaviour being incentivised here is to go with cheaper foreign talent.
