The Rangers Winter 2025 Transfer Rumours and Deals - Thread

It's an interesting and difficult question but the starting XI condition is somewhat of a fallacy since most teams rotate fairly significantly nowadays.

I'd suggest Lyall Cameron would be an obvious target and there are a few more worthy of consideration such as Clarkson, Penrice, Shankland and Mitov who could definitely become a factor over the next three windows. There are various others that we could argue we should have picked up earlier in the last 3-5 years.

Generally though, right now, there aren't many who would immediately come in and improve the first XI per se. Improving the squad is a fairer consideration and Luke McCowan at Celtic has shown a player need not be young to be a decent addition either.

We are struggling financially as a club so are going to have to be a lot cleverer in the market going forward. I'm quite pleased at the signing of Jefte and Igamane and there's no doubt as much as we need to explore other continents, we need to have our finger on the pulse domestically too.

I get the argument that all the players we signed don't necessarily need to improve our starting 11.

However, if we are spending a chunk of our budget on "X", they must be ready to start and be an upgrade on what we currently have, otherwise we'll struggle to improve (and signing them becomes pointless if it's just to cut wages).

Most teams do rotate and using your example of Celtic and McGowan, it was a low risk signing for them. They have more quality than us and more money, so signings like McGowan are easy for them and very low risk (financially).

I agree regarding Cameron, a player we should be looking to get signed up in a free-transfer.

For me the Shankland shipped has sailed. However if we pick him up on a free and he is willing to accept the same wages at Rangers as he's currently on, then it becomes a low risk signing. We shouldn't be paying a fee for him, or offering him more than he is currently on.

We've had undoubted success in the Scottish market both historically and recently, but the quality of player we require and can afford is now a rarity in Scotland. That's not to say there won't be exceptions, we just need to identify them and sign them before they are tempted elsewhere.

I was reading about his pals Arsenal recently. They are doing really well from corners and set pieces these days. Heard they hired a dedicated set piece coach a while back from Brentford I think?

Food for thought.

Pretty much all EPL clubs have set piece coaches, but none of them have had the success that Arsenal have recently, that I'm aware of anyway. Declan Rice's deliveries against Manure were immense on tuesday night.

I dont think it will last TBH. Teams will definitely start countering it. Whats wrong is the ref and VAR with set pieces, if you watched West Ham's goal ruled out against Leicester the other night there was nothing on the keeper - it was easily a goal. Whats needed is stronger refereeing first. Plus keepers used to be some of the most solid players on the park, now they seem to be wets.

Arsenals recent success is just one small part. Aston Villa have some niche ball retention capability at throw ins I read somewhere.

I'd say as a rule if there is anyway you can gain an advantage over an opponent then do so, this game is often decided by the smallest of margins.

definitely.

For me, I'd have been telling Harry Maguire to have a starting place on Onana's shoulder, as soon as Rice started his run up, fuckin get to that front post and get that big square nut of yours on it.

Didn't we have a set-piece coach under Gerrard?
