If I had a say ... a "defensive" line-up for this game

 

Butland

 

Sterling - Souttar - Balogun

 

Barron

 

Cerny - Raskin - Bajrami - Jefte 

 

Dessers - Igamane

 

Barron to support the three main defenders, Cerny more a winger, Jefte a wingback. Raskin the creative-pressing player in midfield just ahead of Barron, Bajrami the playmaker, both strikers do the press and attack as often as possible.

If Sterling or Balogun moves forward, we still have two CDs (as per usual), plus Barron and/or Raskin.

Nice only have 2 points so far so its a must win for them. Their domestic form isnt bad (5th in ligue 1). 

 

With no out and out left winger it may be likely that Bajrami plays there tonight although when he is listed as the 10 it looks at lot more positive but I expect Diomande to play as the 10. 

 

Only a back 3 would half solve that. I dont see Clement playing this but Id like to see the following (Dessers misses a lot but does score in Europe).

This was our clubs first European tie pity we don’t have a Shearer or a Caldow in defence or Murray and Baird up front I’d even have a seven past Niven in goal rather than shaky Butland .

Another tricky away task in the EL tonight. After a poor performance on Saturday, I would expect changes to the starting XI. Most obvious is Yilmaz at left back with Jefte (whose final ball/pass must improve) in front of him, allowing Bajrami to hopefully get more involved in a central role.

 

It's probably more likely the manager selects Diomande in midfield with Jefte or Yilmaz at left back. If Dio does play then he has to do a lot more than we've seen of late. I did think he had a good game in Greece though so a repetition would be good. Tav to come back in depending on how the manager views Sterling's fitness.

Even these stalwarts in the end were unable to overcome the wiles of continentals, skilled in the black arts aided and abetted by a referee suggested by Scottish pressmen (staunch in those days) to be not quite neutral.
