So we're guessing why he backed out?

A holding statement would be best - we eventually did it with Ibrox redevelopment and it immediately took the pressure of the board.

A generic statement with no names has a very low risk of putting a candidate off or I  the spotlight, in fact it would be impossible for the candidates to be identified unless the board leaked it.

No, not a guess, but what was said online at the time, hence the use of the word allegedly.

What would a generic statement say? That the search continues? That they're close? They aren't ging to say the latter in case it backfires again, given the last candidate pulled out, and aren't going to say the former as they would be accused of issuing a statement that didn't give any information.

Fair enough, that's your opinion. I still think saying nothing is worse than saying something.

The example of a holding statement regarding the Ibrox redevelopment stands. It wasn't what the fans wanted to hear, but the board finally telling the truth (that we all knew anyway) was the correct thing to do.
