Is it time for a fresh approach?

If you think we line up in a flat 4-2-3-1 on the pitch, then you need to go to Specsavers - or the German equivalent.

You can spare any low-key remarks for the Ukraine thread.

We may run rings about your statement above, but that is how we line up in terms of playing personnel. And have done for ages. That we effectively play the fullbacks as auxiliary wingers does not make them any less defensive players. That our DMs are primarily defence-minded players is plain to see ... and quite often these last few years they didn't know whether to stick or twist, leaving our centre-halfs with all the build up work, as the DMs were all over the place. So we set up play with 6 defensive-minded players, who may or may not join the attack with the capabilities they have. IF the fullbacks deliver a winger's job, fair enough. The deficiencies of that system has been outline above and has cost us for years.

Alas, it is Clement's job to change things and we'll have to wait and see whether he wants to do Plan A better or finally see's sense, something most of his predecessors did not - and that cost them their job.

Not having the pressing thing mate sorry

Agree, Dessers regularly commits to a press when its not on and the others aren’t ready for the trigger, it then comes down to the others having the intelligence not to go if they can’t get there in time

Exactly - typical of the Rangers support that when discussing lack of goals, the player(s) to blame are those who actually score the goals and not those who don't 😀

As i said before, play 3-4-3 or whatever and make Tav the right-sided midfielder (who may look at the right defensive side as well). He can weave his "magic" there and no-one gets a stroke if he's caught up-field.

Sample "Defensive" line-up ...

Sterling - Souttar - Pröpper

Tavernier - Barron - Diomande - Jefte

Cerny - Dessers - Matondo/Danilo

... with Barron the DM and Diomande the creative bit. You have 4 defensive players, there rest can still work back, but has freedom to work in front of the defenders as they see fit.

Sample "Offensive" line-up ...

Sterling - Souttar - Pröpper

McCausland - Barron - Lawrence - Cortes

Cerny - Dessers - Danilo

... Barron (or Diomande) the DM, to screen the defenders should they go forward and cover the flanks. The wide players need to track back, should we lose the ball, but can play in front of the defence as they see fit. This should suffice against every team below 4th place.

We're more fluid than what you're describing.

Tavernier has been inverting for a while:

Auxiliary wingers? In phases, sure. In phases they're not.

'That our DMs are primarily defence-minded players is' incorrect. I posted a pass network a few weeks ago showing Diomande - despite playing as part of a '2' on paper - was pushed forward, playing as an #8. He even plays as a #10 at times. Lawrence -who hasn't got a defensive bone in his body - has played as part of a double pivot.

So, it's not 'how we line up in terms of playing personnel'. Tavernier is a RB playing as a DM; Barron is a DM dropping in to play as a CB in build-up; Diomande is a DM that pushes forward. Our #10 presses forward without the ball. (Not all at the same time, of course.)

The 4-2-3-1 is only used on paper. The game is more fluid than that.

Hence my original point: formations are mostly irrelevant.

I don't know where your trying to take it to be honest.

My original response was to a post stating that said Dessers doesn't score in important games. I replied saying he does (and has) and suddenly you've said its not about goals but "presence".

I also stated that most of his goals for us have been opening goals, equalisers or winning goals

Dessers doesn't offer a Morelos type presence (few would) but its undeniable that he offers goals, something no other player in our squad can currently claim.

Dessers is the new Tav, no matter what he does, it'll not be good enough for some.

He scores goals, he's always available, he doesn't let the flack get to him. Wish we had more that offer what he offers.

What's so confusing? Dessers scores goals end of debate.

There is our standard games where he scores, the big games in europe where he is hit and miss, Celtic is our only truly big game domestically how many goal does he have vs Celtic ? Now our striker should be getting at least a goal a game vs them, I like dessers but unless he changes and starts banging in goals vs them he can score as many as he likes vs the Motherwells and Ross counties unless he scores vs them and we win them matches then he is just a good backup player, beating them is what wins you leagues.
