But they were playing Chelsea who went hot and cold - pretty much what Brighton have been doing as well. Plus they play each other this weekend again. It would be nice to see the likes of Bournemouth or Brighton win the Cup, Yet Newcastle havent won a trophy for what 60 odd years and they could end up with 2 coming along. I wonder what the odds are for a Newcastle cup double.

Scott7 6,495
If you’ve got £7,000 - £10,000 to spare you might be able to buy this natty number at auction, the shirt worn by George Robledo of Newcastle United in the 1952 FA Cup Final when he scored the goal in a 1-0 victory over Arsenal. Robledo was a Chilean internationalist. His brother Ted also played for Newcastle in the Final as did Scottish internationalists Ronnie Simpson, Frank Brennan and Bobby Mitchell. Arsenal’s Scotsmen were Alex Forbes and Jimmy Logie. The big surprise is that Jackie Milburn didn’t score for the Magpies. I was only a wee laddie but I remember listening to the wireless commentary and later seeing Newsreel footage at the Pictures. What did I do on Friday? Canna mind.
Scott7 6,495 Posted Friday at 11:08 Share Posted Friday at 11:08 Villa v Cardiff tonight but the pick of the ties for doddering old folks tomorrow is Preston North End v Burnley. the Newcastle rockers v Brighton mods will interest the more up to date folk plus a London derby, working class Millwall v middle class Palace. Bournemouth and City should easily dispose of Wolves and Argyle. United v Fulham would be an away win in the league but this is the Cup so United will win. Forest should be comfortable against Ipswich but you never know.

Forest should be comfortable against Ipswich but you never know. Two founder Football League members will reconvene. Making the quarter-finals will recall an era where both regularly went deep in the competition. Each club’s home is a tribute to such a mid-20th century heyday. For the Sir Tom Finney Stand at Deepdale, read the Jimmy McIlroy Stand at Turf Moor. Preston, last in the top division in 1961, were FA Cup runners-up in 1954 and 1964, and quarter‑finalists twice more in that period, while Burnley, Football League champions in 1960, reached the semis in 1961 and lost the 1962 final. This was a last hurrah of the provincial town club – Preston became a city only in 2002 – as the lifting of footballers’ maximum wage in 1961 began a drift towards Lancashire’s metropolitan areas of Liverpool and Manchester from the mill towns. The postwar era furthered a trend of club chairmen being local businessmen made good, the town’s tycoon given further civic status. Burnley’s chairman from 1955 was Bob Lord, notorious as one of the first men from a football boardroom to become a headline-grabber. Today’s 3pm Saturday TV blackout is an enduring Lord legacy.
Scott7 6,495 Posted Friday at 21:03 Share Posted Friday at 21:03 0-0 HT at Villa Park. The Welsh resisting stoutly on the eve of St David’s day. Haven’t done much but should have had a penalty. Villa did quite a lot but hit the ball straight at the ‘keeper. Rashford Desssersed one up in the air when all he had to do was score.
