Tavernier scored 5 non-penalty goals in 38 league games last season (0.13 p90) . Cortes scored 1 in 6 (0.16 p90). You'd expect him to better that, though. 

 

Tavernier's assists p90 was 0.24, while Cortes was 0.28. 

 

It's the 'extra' assists from a defender that worries me most, but most fullbacks should be able to nowadays. (Yilmaz does have an xA p90 of 0.21.)

 

And that's comparing a well-established player with a youngster just getting used to the league.

Edit - why when reviewing Tavs stats do we discount penalties? Do they not count?

It's a difficult task, but it's not impossible - Cortes, for example, is a starter with a high ceiling.

You chose 'starter' over 'project'. The latter implies youth.

So if he makes up Tavs output, we are no better than last season? Surely we need to better Tavs output?
