A half what? 😆

A central midfielder.

Compo wants a midfielder to take the ball off his CB, pass it into space for a winger to run onto, before the winger plays it back for the midfielder to smash it into the top corner from the edge of the box.

That's it. On repeat.

Compo forgets that this is very difficult when you're playing against 12 men camped inside their own box.

Compo is also living in the 50s. :D

It’s not difficult at all it’s these football experts that make it sound difficult and these modern coaches who’s main football tactical knowledge comes from a blinking manual

A central midfielder

A defensive/attacking left or right midfielder. The equivalent of the central mid was one of the inside forwards nominally left or right.

He doesn't hug the touchline, though, does he?

Off the top of my head:

LW - Inside Left - ST - Inside Right - RW

Left-half - Centre-Half (Half-back?) - Right-Half

FB - FB

In the modern game the Left-half would be central - the equivalent of an #8 - on paper at least.

An Inside-left (or -right) would be an outside forward; like Salah and Mane.

From my East German "Picture Vocabulary" of 1957 ...

The Goalkeeper

The Right Back - The Left Back

The Right Half - The Centre Half - The Left Half

The Outside Right (or Right Winger) - The Inside Right - The Centre Forward - The Inside Left - The Outside Left (or Left Winger)

... what a sight to behold. I'd re-name them today as ...

The Goalkeeper

The Right Centre Half - The Left Centre Half

The Right Wingback - The Defensive Midfielder - The Left Wingback

The Right Winger - The Right Forward - The Centre Forward - The Left Forward - Left Winger

... and it would be totally fine for 95 % of our Scottish games.

Off the top of my head:

Push your fullbacks out wider, withdraw the cb to a position between and slightly forward of them and the two hbs to his left and right and slightly forward.
The hbs didn’t go to the touchline except in pursuit while defending or rarely, because of the presence of wingers, overlapping their inside forward on the attack.

Everybody all over the place when the hurly burly began.

But where do the regista, trequarista, mezzala, libero etc come in to play?

Now you're talking!

aroused ryan GIF

A regista is a #6 - Pirlo

Trquartista is a #10 - Riquelme, Rui Costa, etc.

Mezzala is an #8 - Gerrard, De Bruyne

Libero is a sweeper, or CB with a free role; they can be defensive or attacking - obsolete now, but Koeman, Baresi?
