The Summer 2024 Rangers Transfer Window Rumours and Deals - Thread

Recommended Posts

Age is not really matter now, either way. If you are good enough, you are old enough.

You see Leverkusen or Leipzig with half a team of kids way below 25 running away with games. Same in France and Spain. We (almost forever) have a tendency to sign "talented" youngsters, but also seasoned stars who by default make sure that the talent will hardly ever see the pitch of Ibrox. Only necessity meant that some youngsters were thrown in at the deep end and proved their worth. Only that the managers (of late) simply send them back to the bench/youngsters if the seasoned warriors came back (and usually the dire fare continued). IMHO, most of the chaps blooded these last two seasons hardly set a foot wrong. Brightest spark this season was McCausland, whose drive and bite were rarely seen on that flank with other people. How it can go was seen with Patterson and, to some extent, Bassey.

Likewise, Weir, Davis and Balogun show that if the body is fine, people can nowadays go on to 35 with not much problem. A DM or CM is not exactly meant to be a sprinter these days, just grab the ball from the defence and do something useful with it.

That aside, it looks like we are doing some business early in the window, which is good. The more, the better.

Got to disagree lads sorry.

If the trading model is to be a thing then our squad age needs to come down by a few years.

And so does our XI.

Having a defence that at points was 30+ and also underperforming is a recipe for disaster financially.

We're not Madrid who have a core of 30+ year olds who lead them to the UCL final every season. Even then they've been aggressive with blooding young players like Camavinga, Vini Jr, Bellingham etc.

Any squad needs a few older heads, that's just common sense.

The player trading model doesn't have to apply in every single case.

Player trading isn't just about punting a Bassey every year, Sakala is a good example of good player trading too. So was the likes of Pedro Mendes, pay 3 million get two good years out of him get 3 million back etc. If we get our money back for Dessers or Danilo after a couple of seasons thats fine too..

What it isn't about is investing 7 million in a young English winger and let him walk after 4 years, or not move on a late 20's Croatian international for cash.

Its a balance and we haven't hit that balance at all. In fact we have been miles off.

If we can find a few Steve Davis, Alan McGregors, Jermaine Defoes and Scott Arfields we absolutely should.

Why is it common sense?

And I'm not being deliberately obtuse either - it's just that on the face of it we're in a 2 team league where we generate 4x the revenue of 3rd place in the table.

If we're bringing in older heads with winning experience then I'd get it.

Is it a very Scottish thing (Rangers exc) to do to bring in a 35 year old player who's done at the top level but can do a turn in Scotland?

If you are wanting to kick start a player trading model with a raft of young players with potential you want to develop you will need older guys as a stop gap.

You need a range of experience in the squad.

Same as any 'team' in any job - experience and maturity is needed at times.  Especially at a club where there's an intense pressure to win every match.

Of course a balance is required, but right now we're not short of experienced players, we need to up the number of young, hungry players who are willing to learn and improve their game. I'd far rather see us sign Barron from the sheep than McLean, granted he's not as good a player right now, but at we have to develop young signings to gain a better team and more value in the squad. This should also alleviate our ridiculous wage bill - Apparently higher than Atalanta's.

Youan from Hibs isn't a bad buy at £2.5M as well btw, he's done well in a shite team.

Anyway, all of this is pure conjecture, McLean is probably just the usual lazy rumour.
