Look at that front row. You might have expected Woodburn or Mccoll, both titans, to be seated next to Geordie Young but it’s a youthful Eric Caldow. Mr Struth could obviously foretell the future.

 

Look at the second row. Pass quickly over Stanners and disregard Woodburn and McColl - we won’t see their like again - but Rae, Little and Prentice would transform the current team.

My father once said he’d have strapped Stanners to the front of a 25 pounder .

National Service in the Black Watch. The lad with the kilt looks soldierly enough but unlike his right half, he only had to fight paper clips and typewriter ribbons.
