Both is unrealistic - recent history shows you can't have both.

Maybe moderate success in Europe and domestic success but hugely unrealistic to have domestic dominance and getting to later stages of Europe.

We couldn't manage it with one of best managers in our history with better players than we have now, so how can we expect both?

I just don't agree with your premise that it's either/or.

You're just giving us an unrealistic either/or scenario with hugely limited parameters and definitions.

We should be aiming for trebles and getting good runs (CL group stages or EL group stages and a round or two) in Europe.

Actually, I'll simplify it more: aim for trebles and CL or European football after Christmas.

But would the majority fans settle for this? I would ever feckin year.

Some fans are demanding doubles and trebles as well as getting to later stages of Europe

Yip. Especially now. Would have swapped it all for the Europa but only because of '67

So was Walter Smith a failure as Rangers manager especially in his first spell? We were horrific in Europe apart for 1992/93.

We did however dominate domestically whilst out-spending all our domestic (and most European) rivals?

In Europe, Yes.

Wait a minute—are you just trying to lower expectations for Beale?

No, I'm genuinely interested in what makes a Rangers manager / team a success.

If Walter Smith and his teams were  failures what Rangers manager / team would you say was successful?

Domestic success; European failure.

I would've sacked him before he reached NIAR. :D

I don't see the point in this?
