How much influence does our DoF actually have on recruitment?

If that's the case then the real problem doesn't lie with either the DoF or the manager. The issue has to be the MD who hasn't ensured there are functionally effective boundaries between the two roles.

It's clear to anyone with half an eye that Robertson was a weak character who should never have occupied the MD's chair. What's even more worrying is that the Chairman and his board either couldn't see Robertson's weakness or they were happy with it.

That's a good point.

I've mentioned eleswhere that it does seem like the board don't quite know what they want from a DoF, other than 'a DoF'.

It's a good start, but perhaps it needs to be more clearly defined.

I get handing over full control of the sporting departments off-field to the DoF but if we do then we need a clearly defined ethos from top to bottom of the club, e.g Ajax, City, Red Bull. All of these teams/groups pick or develop players and managers that suit their style and the team doesn't miss a beat generally.

Going from a fitness driven mid-block press to a more methodical, recyclical approach in Gio was strange for that reason.

This might be a wild shout but if the Gerrard/Beale blueprint is the way forward then I'd ask Roy Hodgson to come in for a couple of seasons and guide Beale and advise the club, his Fulham side back in the day were the archetype of what we want. It depends on how serious we are about this. Might get pelters for this hahaha.

Difficult to implement and run a settled, functional footballing infrastructure when you are consistently second in a two horse race. Good ideas and intentions get lost in the fallout.

Add the pressure that comes to bear on top of those responsible in the Glasgow goldfish bowl and constant change is inevitable. Individuals and structural.

The obvious problem or danger is a two horse race becomes a one horse race.

It happened before (2012) and lasted for about 8 years.

They continue to operate within a financially viable model. We don't and appear to be front loading once again. If it works, good (but still no viable structure). If it doesn't work, the future ain't bright at Ibrox.

Seen a few links to DoF's the last couple of days so thought I'd post on this topic, here's a solid link from Jordan Campbell on an ex NI and Arsenal player/development worker.

Shame Campbell stopped reporting exclusively on Rangers for the Atheltic, it was geniunely excellent Rangers content and journalism.

What do you guys think? Seems like an intriguing and encouraging link to me.
