Christian Nerlinger rejects Sporting Director offer

Christian Nerlinger has knocked back the chance to replace Ross Wilson as Rangers' new sporting director.

The Ibrox club are searching for a new transfer chief after under-fire Wilsonended his three-and-a-half-year stint in Glasgow to join Premier League side Nottingham Forest earlier this week. Former Gers midfielder Nerlinger was one of the leading candidates for the vacancy, having worked in a similar role with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich between 2009 and 2012.

However, the German has since established his own agency working as a football consultant and has rejected the chance to return to his former club. He told Transfermarkt: "It is a great honour for me to be contacted by this incredibly large and traditional club. Rangers are and always will be special to me.

"With my agency, I have built up a very close, loyal and trusting relationship with my players over the past few years and I feel a great responsibility towards them. The agency is the way I always wanted it to be, and I really enjoy working with the guys every day.”

It comes after Michael Beale confirmed that he will fill the void left by Wilson's exit as he plans a massive summer overhaul at Ibrox.

He said: “I will fill that void and oversee some of the departments for the moment. In terms of recruitment and targets, myself and Ross have both been working closely on that.

“We have an extensive recruitment team and the meetings have already been held. Pre-season and recruitment has been pretty much finalised.

“Now it’s just about ticking one or two boxes on some areas, maybe some players that see their futures elsewhere.

“The main part of the recruitment process in terms of identifying players has already happened. Now it’s about executing those deals.

“There is only a small portion of the season to go and then we’ll assess everything in the summer, as any club would do, in terms of their structure.”
