Rangers send scouts to watch Joel Piroe

Glasgow Rangers have sent scouts to watch Joel Piroe ahead of a potential move to the Scottish Premiership, according to reports.

THE LOWDOWN: ALONGSIDE WHITTAKER?

The Light Blues are believed to still be in contact with Swansea City regarding a summer deal for Morgan Whittaker having failed to land him in January and it appears that he isn’t the only player Michael Beale is targeting.

The Dutchman has now entered the final 18 months of his contract in Wales, and being Russell Martin’s top-performing offensive player, has caught the eye of the hierarchy at Ibrox.

The Championship outfit are having the kind of season where they aren’t in any real danger but neither are they going to achieve anything so the striker could be tempted to look elsewhere should he want to progress his career further.

According to Football League World, Rangers (and by extension sporting director Ross Wilson) have been ‘scouting’ Piroe in ‘recent weeks’ and would offer a ‘different type of opportunity’ should he decide to make the move north of the border.

Burnley, Middlesbrough and Norwich City are also ‘keeping tabs’ on the 23-year-old, whilst Crystal Palace and Everton both ‘explored’ a deal in January, though nothing ever came to fruition.

Sources believe that Swansea are ‘at risk’ of losing their standout performer as a result of failing to properly get themselves going under Martin, so this could be one to watch in the months ahead.

Piroe has been dubbed a ‘danger man’ by journalist Josh Bunting and Rangers need to act fast should they want to secure his services ahead of their fellow competitors.

The Wijchen native has clocked up 13 goals and provided one assist in 34Championship appearances so far this season where he’s currently averaging 3.2 shots per 90 minutes.

The 6 foot 1 star also ranks in the 95th percentile for pass completion, showing his excellent ability to link up well with his teammates, and the 91st percentile for most progressive passes (FBRef).

Despite naturally being a centre-forward, the left-footed ace has played in fivedifferent positions since the start of his career and is comfortable operating anywhere across the frontline.

The Teddy Bears have to head into the summer window on a mission to recruit players that will be able to have a significant impact on the side and get them competing with Celtic again and Piroe is certainly the perfect candidate to come in and do just the job.

Joel Piroe ... is actually a striker. Just in case anyone who doesn't watch Swansea that often wants to know. Joël Mohammed Ramzan Piroe of Dutch-Suriname pedigree, 14 goals and one assist in 36 games this season. 84 goals and 24 assists in 174 games (at this age not bad).

I do wonder what Swansea will want, since he ain't bad and has a year on his current deal to run.

3.2 shots per game and 34 games means over 100 shots and 13 goals doesn’t seem a very good return. Perhaps the stattos amongst us can compare this against other strikers?

£6M for a 13 goal striker in a poor league seems excessive but that’s what happens when we only seem to look in the most overpriced market in world football.

We need to pick up guys like this before they hit the ground at the likes of Swansea. Championship strikers come at a massive premium. Some really good like Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney and some not so good like Neal Maupey. Not to mention the wage demands will be high.

Guys like Piroe should be picked up when let go from PSV, where he impressed on loan elsewhere in holland before going to Swansea.

I can't find a table of conversion rates to compare, but Piroe has a 9.2% conversion rate with the highest in the league having around 14%.

Haaland's conversion rate is 23.3%; Kane is 16.4%.

If you look at team conversion rate, Burnley and Middlesbourough (the highest scorers in the league) have an 11.8% conversion rate. Sheff Utd, who are second, have a 9.1% conversion rate.

I don't think Piroe's conversion rate is that bad; it's not spectacular.

Piroe's xG is 15.2, including 2 penalties, so I'd say he's scoring as many as he should be scoring; He's maybe under-performing a little. He scored 22 goals from an xG of 12.2 last season which is a huge over-performance; perhaps not sustainable.

Bare in mind that he has played 10 games as a winger and #10.

Here's his comparative stats versus other forwards in his league:
