Tie-break rules

Recommended Posts

Just in case we need them!

The tie-break rules are as follows:

1. Highest number of points.
2. The best goal difference from the group matches played between teams level on points.
3. The highest number of goals scored between teams that are level.
4. The highest number of goals scored away from home between the teams that are level.
5. If two teams are still level after applying steps 1-4, repeat the steps and apply the above criteria exclusively to the two teams concerned. If the two teams still remain level, criteria 6 and 7 should be applied.
6. The best goal difference from all group matches played.
7. Highest number of goals scored from all group matches played.

History gives differing takes on the chance of winning the game (not by 5 goals).

- The negative is that Ajax always beat us (5 out of 5 thus far)

3-2, 3-1, 4-1, 1-0, 4-0

- The positive is that in Gio's other CL group campaign with Feyenoord started with 5 defeats but ended with a home victory.

A win would bring in 2.8M euros, so hardly a dead rubber.

I'd take a draw right now.

I watched bits of Ajax's games in Liverpool and Naples and despite losing both, they played some nice football and created chances.

Five or six months ago, I'd have fancied our chances of beating them at Ibrox.  At the moment, we're struggling to score against Dundee and Livingston.

The day that Mr van Bronckhorst selects, and sends out, a team in a formation to secure victory by a 5 goal margin, is, indeed, the day that Shakira blesses Gonzo79's bed.

But it's a funny old game...

...and we'd need proof of the Shakira stuff
