[FT] Union SG 2 - 0 Rangers

Recommended Posts

As for the Belgians: they had a dream first season in the big league, losing the title via a play off system, but

the manager left for Anderlecht after the end of the season;

their two best players were flogged in the summer;

they are hosting the match in OH Leuwen's stadium, a good half hour away from their home turf;

the defender, Siebe van der Heyden, said last week that they were used to playing Rangers on FIFA;

the new manager likewise observed that the players may know Rangers from PlayStation, and that they will know them from television,

and, on top of all that,  I confidently predict that 'second season syndrome' will kick-in.

One thing's for sure: I definitely don't want to hear any early season rustiness as an excuse; we looked fit against Spurs and West Ham and they clearly were not playing friendlies. Anyway we should have got this sorted by now - we should have beaten Malmoe.

We looked like world beaters against Real Madrid but then Malmo, Dundee Utd and Malmo showed that not to be the case.

We played poorly in those matches but I don't think that was down to lack of match fitness.  It was more down to poor tactics and the players not applying themselves sufficiently.

We also should have had a penalty at Tannadice, when Sakala had his shirt pulled.

Sakala wasn't in the squad for that match.

You are thinking of the next away game against DUtd.

A much happier fixture sandwich....... Dortmund, Dundee Utd, Dortmund.

You mean the plucky little Belgians are going to stand fast and repel the invader? Always a first time, I suppose.

You started it, repeating your 0-1 prediction of Malmo (A) 😀

No-one on here predicted a Malmo win that afternoon, however tonight some have predicted a narrow USG win.

There was no Roofe or Morelos in Sweden, Wright and Itten started.

ps. Our last 4 games in the CL have all been against Malmo !! ....At least USG are new, that is something.

Coming back to this a second....

IIRC the second leg at Ibrox saw us wilt visibly after about 30-35 minutes.

We were all over them from the off with high energy, fast tempo football. We weren't precise in our passing or fluent in our play but the energy carried us along, we dominated and were a goal up. Then we hit a wall and Malmo just took over, could have scored a couple before HT. Did score a couple after HT, with 10 men.

I very much expected that but they have started really well. They had very good results in pre-season and so far drew away to the team who finished 9th last season and beat Cherleroi who finished 6th last season. The team who finished 9th actually beat them at their own ground last season. So no signs of it so far.
