Rangers To Be Honoured By Glasgow City Council With 150th Birthday Civic Reception

Recommended Posts

Rangers are to be honoured by Glasgow City Council with a civic reception to celebrate their 150th birthday.

Appropriately, 150 players, officials, former players and former directors have been invited to the City Chambers on July 27. It comes four months after the club marked the period in 1872 when the club was formed in the west end of the city when they faced Aberdeen on March 2.

There was also a legends match at Ibrox and dinner when former Rangers stars like Barry Ferguson, Ronald de Boer, Michael Mols, Jorg Albertz and Paul Gascoigne - as well as boss Gio van Bronckhorst - took on a team of foreign heroes that included Luis Figo, Kaka, Robert Pires, Gheorghe Hagi and Ibrox assistant Roy Makaay.

Lord Provost Jaqueline McLaren told Scottish Express Sport: ”Glasgow is recognised across the world as a great sporting city – and a huge part of that is down to its long love affair with football.

“Over the last 150 years, Rangers has been one of the sport’s most storied names – and I’m very happy to welcome current players and staff to the City Chambers to mark not only this anniversary but the club’s place in the city’s own history.”

A month ago Rangers received a celebratory reception by the Secretary of State for Scotland Alister Jack, at an official event at Dover Hall in Whitehall.

Managing Director Stewart Robertson said: “We are very honoured and grateful to have been invited by the Secretary of State for Scotland to this very special event to mark the 150th anniversary of Rangers Football Club.

“I believe it speaks volumes for the contribution Rangers has made to our nation in a positive sense over these years that the club is being recognised in this manner, and we look forward to promoting the good name of Rangers even further this evening to invited guests from across the political spectrum, as well as wider society.”

If I’m invited I’ll bring one of my slaves to taste the food for poison.

I've been to a few functions in the Chambers and it's always a surprisingly been good.

Not all plates will bear poisoned food. Probably the vessels with the pestles. Or maybe the chalices from the palace.
