Red Star Struggle To Home Win

Red Star Scrape Win

RANGERS chief scout Ewan Chester watched Champions League rivals Red Star Belgrade struggle to a 1-0 win at the weekend.

Ognjen Koroman, Red Star BelgradeSkipper Ognjen Koroman scored the only goal of the game against lowly Smederevo three minutes before half-time but it was a difficult game for the Serbian champions.

Red Star fielded largely the same side that lost to Rangers last week although vice-captain Dusan Basta was back in.

Coach Milorad Kosanovic was far from pleased. He said: "We should have put more effort into the game. The game was open from the kick-off, as Smederevo proved to be a willing partner.

"I could tell that my guys were a little tired, losing concentration on occasion and committing unusual errors, all of which made our main goal of winning all three points that much harder to achieve.

"We lacked speed and were often sluggish to get back in defence. On the plus side, we were good down the Ewan Chesterflanks and managed to create a number of scoring opportunities.

"I have given the lads time off until Monday evening. I am tempted to extend their mini-break, in view of the fact that they have played three hard, competitive, matches in only seven days.

"I would like to think that the mistakes we saw in our game at the weekend were on account of exhaustion; otherwise, we might have a big problem on our hands."

Rangers will have Red Star watched again next weekend when they play Hajduk Kula away from home ahead of the crucial second leg in Belgrade on August 28.

I hope there is no question of game fixing here.:)

Smederevo is one of the worst sides in our league. Still, red star hardly beat them. It's obvious that they have huge problems with the scoring. Because of that, they are ready to sign nenad jestrovic but he won't be able to play against the Gers.

Media here is totally unjust by proclaiming red star as the "favourites". Their non objective and blind behaviour is irritating. But, that's the reflection of red star fans and club eternal unreal desires. They whole optimism is based on "supposed-to-be-extremly-hostile-atmosphere-on-the stadium" not on the quality of their poor team. Not enough to beat the Gers. I hope that in the Tuesday they will be drawn in reality...

The game in Belgrade will be very difficult.

I'm reading nothing in to this.

Agreed, but i'd certainly prefer it that going into the game with us they were struggling against poor teams rather than playing great and getting good results.

Of course you would and so would I.

But it will still be difficult over there and we'll need to be at the top of our game.

The one thing i see in our team just now is a physical presence, can't see us being intimidated by a bunch of thugs, i'm very confident going into this match, can see us getting a win over there, not saying it's going to be easy but we will win.
