Maybe it was just a smokescreen to keep the kidnapping plot quite? As you say though, you can imagine Cruyff being quite political. The other story from 78 is Scotland beating Netherlands 3-2. Is there not also doubt about this game as the Netherlands did not want to top the group as that meant playing Argentina in the next group phase.
