ranger_syntax 4,422
Watched these goals earlier today for some reason. There are a few really good ones in there. One that is really dubious too.
Scott7 6,155
A princely footballer. He with the oddly named Babbington and Houseman unlocked defences at lightning speed.

The military had seized power of the country in 1977 following Peron’s death a couple of years earlier. People opposed to the military regime simply ‘disappeared ‘. The WC final between Argentina & Holland was played at River Plate’s stadium in Buenos Aires which was right next to the naval mechanics college where many of the tortures were carried out by the military government. The Dutch didn’t want the final played there because of this but were ignored. If you ever see a 1978 WC final game you’ll see black tape around the bottom of the goalposts which was a tribute to Argentine people who ‘disappeared’ during the military regime which lasted from 77-84

I was quite young and only remember the streamers and names and archie gemmil not any controversies? The format of the 78 world cup was very different to the current tournaments. There essentially were no knockout phases or semi finals as the teams went into another group of 4, with the 2 group winners heading to the final. In Argentinas group, they were required to beat a decent Peru side by 4 goals to overtake Brazil. The final score was 6-0 with some truly awful "defending" by the Peruvians. Peruvians officials have subseuntly stated that the match was indeed fixed.
