Castore Sign Newcastle Deal

Recommended Posts

It is one thing doing a deal with Ashley to put Castore branded goods (including Rangers products) into SD stores. It is entirely another thing to sign a shirt deal with Ashley to provide kit to Newcastle. After what Ashley done to us, there is absolutely no way the fans will do any business with any Ashley-related business. And rightly so. If Ashley takes even a small piece of Castore, then I predict Rangers fans will stop buying Castore product. It's that simple.

If we signed a kit deal with Nike or Adidas (here's hoping!) and that placed our kit into SD stores, then our fans will continue to avoid buying them from there and buy them elsewhere. Fans could see that SD and Ashley has no influence on our club or our kit deal with one of the worldwide big players. That Castore has only two football clubs in its portfolio and that is us and Newcastle is far too coincidental for Rangers fans to not be worried about that. As Castore is an independent company, a greater influence of Ashley over them is entirely possible (he has plenty previous for starting with a small deal like this and before you know it totally controlling a company) so it remains to be seen how things develop in the remainder of our deal with Castore, and it will be interesting to see how our fans react to developments.

If nothing else, it shows a huge lack of respect to our club from Castore, and a huge mistake by the Castore guys to jump into bed with the devil himself. I hope they dont regret it.

I think it is grossly over the top to expect Castore to not do a deal with Newcastle simply because of the issues Rangers fans have had with Ashley.  In fact, it isnt based on any rationality whatsoever.  Newcastle are one of England's biggest clubs with incredibly loyal fans.  They are a coup for any football brand given the numbers of merchandising sales they potentially provide.  It is also incredibly egotistic for Rangers fans to think that Castore should be solely considering our fragile emotions over Ashley - they are a business and, rightly so, couldnt care less about our thoughts over Ashley, particularly IF Ashley has nothing to do with the running of Castore and, specifically, nothing to do with the merchandising deal we have with Castore.

To suggest that fans shouldnt buy any products with Ashley if he buys a piece of Castore is ridiculous IMO. Ashley is a multi-billionaire who will have stakes in many, many companies that Rangers fans already do business with, and make purchases from.

Castore only have two clubs in their portfolio because they are a fairly new company and are trying to build that brand out - you need to start somewhere.  And when you are trying to break into what is almost a monopolistic industry you will take whatever business you can that allows you to break in and possibly challenge the establishment.

Sometimes we need to take a step back and think more rationally than emotionally.

Agreed. My reaction to the whole Castore/Newcastle issue is "who cares". As long as it has no negative impact on what the Rangers board, staff and players achieve then, frankly, I couldn't give a stuff. Castore isn't Rangers, it's not even part of Rangers. My only concern is Rangers - not Ashley, Castore or anyone else.

You’re reading this the wrong way round, with respect to you. To my mind Castore shouldn’t be doing any business with Ashley because of Ashley’s record. Why would anyone want to do business with someone so litigious and who wouldn’t think twice about shafting them at any opportunity? He is completely toxic and it shows terrible business acumen (IMO) from Castore to sign a deal with the devil.

In whatever field of business you are in there will be companies you know should be avoided because of their business practices. In football, by far the worst culprit is Ashley.

They're a business, not an ethics commune.  They'll make a lot of money selling Newcastle United merchandise.

After United, Liverpool and Arsenal, who in England would sell more shirts than Newcastle? Chelsea maybe?

Man City, Chelsea, Spurs?

Remember the PL is global and most shirts sales probably happen in Asia.
