Separate Entity FC vs Rangers Match Smashed Sky Sports Viewing Records

Recommended Posts

Celtic's Premiership clash with Rangers achieved Sky Sports' highest ever audience for an SPFL clash.

The December 29 showdown was watched by 1.4million fans from around the globe - including those watching on Sky Go.

The record-breaking figures bode well for Sky Sports who recently became official and exclusive partners for the Scottish Premiership beginning next season.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL Chief Executive, said: "The record viewing figures for the December Celtic vs Rangers match is fantastic news and highlights the increasing interest in Scottish football, not only within Scotland but across the whole of the UK and around the globe.
"The SPFL continues to deliver the passion, drama and excitement that Scottish football has long been renowned for. We look forward to building upon this as we extend our new, long-term agreement with Sky Sports starting from season 2020/21."
Gary Hughes, Head of Football at Sky Sports, added: "Sky Sports is delighted that over 1.4m viewers watched one of world football’s greatest rivalries between Celtic and Rangers.

"Viewing of the SPFL has risen 8% on last season, and 47% on the 2017/18 campaign, showing the appetite our customers have for Scottish football.
"We very much look forward to bringing viewers all the best matches, including every Old Firm game, as the season reaches its climax. All this ahead of Sky Sports becoming the exclusive home of the SPFL from the 2020/21 season."
Rangers won the game in question, 2-1, thanks to goals from Ryan Kent and Nikola Katic either side of a Callum McGregor equaliser.
The match had everything to bring the worldwide audience back - with Alfredo Morelos and Gers coach Michael Beale both being sent-off in injury time.
Ryan Christie also missed a penalty.

"appetite ... for Scottish football"

So where was that "appetite" when Rangers were cast into the lower leagues? No one gives a shit about Scottish football, they're watching now because Rangers are back, no other reason.

In all honesty, I suspect Gerrard's appointment has a lot to do with the increased viewing figures due to his status with football fans all over the world.

All about the Rangers :yesrfc:

Yes. You have to laugh at the brass neck of that statement. All those Sell Out Sundays really whetted people's appetite didn't they? Oh wait.....

What this means is that 1.4 million people, or thereby, saw top whistler, Mr Kevin Clancy.

That, surely, must worry the authorities.

But all the other referees who watched the match will now feel great that no matter how bad a performance they give, at least there are referees in Scotland who are much worse.  If I was Clancy I'd be embarrassed but I bet he's not.
