(Daily Record) However, Hibernian and Celtic have entered the race for the £1.5m-rated Naismith. (The Sun) Celtic are now clear favourites to sign Naismith after Kilmarnock rejected an £850,000 offer from Hibernian and a £1.5m package from Rangers. ascender 352 Posted July 5, 2007 Share Posted July 5, 2007 So it looks like after weeks of putting in derisory offers before finally getting close to what Killie are after, we've pissed them off to the point where they're now either wanting more money or just don't want to sell him to us. As usual we probably won't know what's really gone on for a while yet, but we do know that we were the only club to have made an offer until recently, so this deal should have been tied up weeks ago. If we do miss out on him, it won't be the end of the world from a playing perspective. But I'd suggest that the way this deal has been handled is symptomatic of the way our club has been run for the last 3 or 4 years and is another damning indictment about DM. Rangers look set to fail in their attempts to sign Steven Naismith after Kilmarnock revealed they are close to reaching an agreement with a rival bidder. The Rugby Park club have confirmed a verbal offer, in excess of the four failed bids which have so far been tabled by Rangers, has been received and a deal could be thrashed out by the weekend. Celtic are presumed to be the mystery bidder, with 20-year-old striker Naismith having already ruled out a move south of the border and other SPL clubs lacking both the financial clout and lure of the Scottish champions. The news will come as a bitter blow to Rangers, who have already seen previous targets Scott Brown and Scott McDonald sign for their rivals across the city. Speaking from their training camp in Italy, Kilmarnock manager Jim Jefferies told PA Sport: "We have had an offer in excess of what Rangers have offered. "It's a verbal offer at the moment, with some additional add-ons still to be discussed to take us up to what we're looking for. "We expect to hear back from the club who made the verbal offer in a couple of days." Jefferies also denied Kilmarnock had reneged on an agreement with Rangers. The Ayrshire club value the SPFA Young Player of the Year at �£2million and say they have always made it clear they want �£1.5million plus add-ons, while Rangers were only willing to offer �£1.5million including add-ons based on appearances. "We have never had an agreement with Rangers," insisted Jefferies. "They are entitled to their valuation and so are we. "They have tried to get him for as little amount as possible, as you would expect any club to do. "But they have known from a few days after they made their first ridiculous offer what we are looking for. "If Rangers want to pull out, that's up to them. Steven will be a bit disappointed but he will get on with his life at Kilmarnock." According to reports today, Kilmarnock chiefs have also rejected a shock �£850,000 bid from Hibernian, as well as Rangers' latest offer in the last 24 hours. But Jefferies claimed Killie were not trying to instigate a bidding war for their prize asset. Naismith flew out to Italy with the rest of his team-mates this morning and the Killie boss pointed out that any deal would only be concluded if the player also agreed to the move. "He will only go if he wants to go," he said. "We're not trying to sell him or get into an auction. "We have always been straight and asked for a fair price. If we agree a deal and he doesn't want to go there, he doesn't have to go. "He has handled all of this well but it must be unsettling which is why we want things resolved as soon as possible.
