Former EPL ref analyses Porteous Cosgrove reds

Recommended Posts

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher insists the red cards handed out to Ryan Porteous and Sam Cosgrove were both spot on.

There has been plenty of debate after the pair were dismissed at the weekend for their respective challenges on Borna Barisic and Kristoffer Ajer .

Hibs defender Porteous was given a straight red for his late tackle on Barisic as Rangers ran out 3-0 winners at Easter Road.

Less than 24 hours later Sam Cosgrove then suffered the same fate as he lunged in on Ajer as Celtic edged out Aberdeen 2-1 at Parkhead.

Dons boss Derek McInnes was adamant it was the wrong call and the Pittodrie club has subsequently appealed the decision, with the case to be heard at Hampden tomorrow evening.

But former ref Gallagher believes both players deserved to see red.

Talking about Porteous' tackle, he said: "You don't really need me to judge this one, do you?

"Not only does he clatter into him, he sets himself and bang."

On Cosgrove's sending off, he added: "I think the referee judges the distance he's come and the speed.

"There's no doubt he gets the ball. He touches the ball. I think the referee sees him coming so far and lunges in.

"He's given it for serious foul play."

Turns out the ref was correct or at least the panel decided he was. Cosgrove loses appeal.

Aberdeen have lost their appeal against the red card Pittodrie striker Sam Cosgrove received against Celtic at Parkhead on Saturday.

Cosgrove was ordered off by referee Euan Anderson following a challenge on Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer in the second-half of the Ladbrokes Premiership match.

Derek McInnes, whose side lost the game 2-1, was keen to have the forward, who has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, available for his side's home match against Livingston on Boxing Day.

However, a fast track tribunal hearing at Hampden today upheld the red card meaning the player will have to sit out the visit of Gary Holt's side and the match against Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.

There's definitely no consistency to it but Cosgrove for one has been getting away with his actions too long. Watch for the squeals from the sheep when Livi and Dykes dish out some of the same on Thursday. See what they think of it then.

I believe the Compliance Officer made ten interventions last season reference Rangers?

What are Peter's instructions reference the Compliance Officer this season?

We should be told.

Maybe the CO has finally grown some balls?
