Rangers take disciplinary action against Eros Grezda after spitting shame

Recommended Posts

RANGERS will take disciplinary action against winger Eros Grezda as he considers his Ibrox future following a spitting incident this month.

The Albanian was part of the Light Blues’ Development Squad that made the trip to Northern Ireland for a third round match in the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup.

But he was the subject of an internal investigation after allegedly spitting at Ballymena defender Andrew Burns in the second half of a 1-0 victory for Graeme Murty’s Colts.

The shocking incident sparked angry scenes on the night and Murty and coach Peter Lovenkrands, plus Mark Hateley and captain for the evening Greg Docherty, apologised to Ballymena boss David Jeffrey.

Gerrard revealed last week that he would speak to Grezda about the incident and the 24-year-old responded on social media by saying: “Totally agree spitting is disgusting, but there is always two sides to a story!!! Apologies for last days actions.”

Rangers were unable to offload Grezda - a £2million signing from Osijek last summer - before the end of the European transfer window but Qatari sides Al Sadd and Al-Rayyan have both been credited with an interest in a potential loan deal.

With his first team prospects bleak, an early exit from Ibrox would appear to be the forward’s best option at present after Rangers hit him in the pocket for his spit shame.

Gerrard said: “We have had a loan enquiry for Grezda in the last couple of days. The board are looking at that.

“He has been disciplined and I am sure he will be getting a letter off the club pretty soon.

“I have told him face to face what we want to do in terms of that.

“The club write to him and then it’s up to him whether he accepts it or challenges it.

“We had a chat man to man in private and I told him what I thought of the incident.

“He put his side across and I delivered what the board had decided to punish him, in terms of the financial side. Now it’s up to him. He has a decision when the letter arrives.

“I didn’t say he wouldn’t ever play for the club again but he will be disciplined.”
