Josh McPake targeted by Ireland as Scotland face fight for winger

Correct

Sadly, no. The 4 home nations agreement only accepts the residency rule only if the player has been educated in Scotland for 5 years. In the case of Tav, he was born in England but came here as an adult. A shame as he would solve our right back problem at a stroke. Lazy journalism from our old friend the Daily Record.

Doesn't mean he doesn't qualify.  A gentleman's agreement is different from whether or not he actually qualifies

Sorry Craig to belabour the point but he only qualifies if he has a Scottish parent or grandparent: the residency 'rule' only comes into play if he was at school in Scotland. Remember we had a similar scenario with Lorenzo Amoruso?

Re. Tavernier - I don’t remember who was manager, but didn’t Nacho Novo (not educated in Scotland) actually get called up to the squad, only to be hounded out by tartan army bigots? I’m sure he got very close to selection..

Nah, it was discussed by the media because he'd spent enough time here and hadn't been capped by Spain, but he was never called up.

Funnily enough I'm more relaxed about residency rules coming in than the grandparent rule. If someone came to Scotland as an 18 year old and made their life here I'm comfortable with them becoming 'Scottish' in every sense.

We're just as bad as the Irish now when it comes to capping players. We actively scout English youth sides looking for any links. There's a lad at Watford of whom great things are expected, with one Scottish Granny, he's now in the 'Scottish international system' despite never having set foot here and both his parents being English. There's a boy at Feyonord too, who we've similarly 'scouted'.
