McInnes a bullet dodged

Can't help but feel had Walter Smith been a manager of say Dundee United (not coach) that we could have said similar about him.

Disagree.  Say what you want about Walter's spells in charge but lack of self-awareness is not be a charge that would be levelled at him.

I think you'd have to factor in the media environment of the mid 80's compared to now.

That said, my point was more related to pragmatic management style.

I was really surprised at just how negative Aberdeen were yesterday. They'd no creativity or invention in their side and were relying on set-pieces, you didn't even fear them on the break yesterday.

That said they were without McKay-Stevens and McGinn two relatively creative attacking players, and Shinnie. As someone said last night Shinnie is a big player for them, he's their leader and one of their best players and they'll really miss him next season.

I'm delighted with how Gerrard has us playing and his first season has gone pretty well. I doubt we'd be as entertaining had McInnes taken the job. Yet I still think McInnes is a decent manager, doing what he can with what he's got. I'm not sorry he didn't take the job with us, but I'd be happy if he took the Scotland job for example.

It's Shinnie, McGinn and GMS who have tended to be their main players to carry the ball forward.

Yesterday was their Sadiq moment in terms of availability.

In terms of the reference to Walter Smith, I enjoyed those years a lot, especially because we had two of the best players ever to wear the jersey, but let's be honest the football was dire.  I was obviously delighted that we got to the UEFA cup final, but again there was nothing to be proud of other than the results (which were astonishing).

McInnes has never demonstrated that he is capable of bringing any style of football to us.  Even those games when Aberdeen are playing second division teams they can't produce anything any of us would want to watch on a regular basis.

To the OP, there is no doubt whatsoever that this was a bullet dodged, but I agree with @JohnMc that he would be good for Scotland.  In the majority of those games his team will be up against superior opposition and there's no doubt he is tactically very good at setting his teams up to limit damage.  Furthermore, it means from a selfish point of view that he can deploy these tactics in games I'm unlikely to watch.
