The whistler failed to spot a foul on James Tavernier in the build up to the Hibees goal

REFEREE Steven McLean phoned Steven Gerrard to apologise for missing the foul that led to Hibs’ equaliser last Friday night.

The official blundered by failing to award Rangers a free-kick when Stephane Omeonga tripped up James Tavernier.

Hibs broke upfield with striker Florian Kamberi netting an equaliser — to leave Gerrard absolutely fuming.

SunSport can reveal the Ibrox gaffer went to see McLean at Easter Road and ask for an explanation with the whistler vowing to study the TV footage.

Having done so, McLean contacted Gerrard to admit he got it wrong.

Refs’ chief John Fleming is also believed to have been critical of McLean and assistants, Graham Chambers and Stuart Stevenson.

Gerrard referred to the decision again and said: “Without that decision, we win the game 1-0 and you are talking about another tough win away from home.”

Meanwhile, Gers keeper Allan McGregor has announced his retirement from the Scotland national team.

The experienced stopper had 42 caps for his country before deciding to call time on his international career.

Scotland assistant James McFadden was gutted to lose the keeper, as he revealed Alex McLeish had tried to talk McGregor out of the decision.

Hindsight is a fine thing but McLean was not that far away and what was the bloody linesman looking at!?

Decisions like this can cost people jobs and now that a so called apology has been made should McLean not be carpeted?.

I actually he got that right mate? He looked onside in the replay. If it had happened to us we would be praising the ref.

I was just wondered what he flagged for and why the ref over ruled him! haven't seen it back

He did get it right but his view was poor and players on both teams stopped playing because the linesman kept his flag up.

 

We were lucky not to concede because of it and double lucky as we scored on the counter as Hibs also seemed to be unsure of what was happening.

 

It was poor refereeing.

McLean had been letting a few tackles go throughout the match.

He might argue that he was consistent in that and that he was looking to let the game flow but doing that would be taking a risk that it might lead to exactly what happened re. the Hibs equaliser or a bad injury.

 

A foul is a foul and they should be awarded, period.

The assistant got it wrong. Ref got that one right.
