Rangers to continue push for SFA rule changes after being hit with £6,000 fine over Willie Collum comments

Compliance Officer Clare Whyte had issued five notices of complaint relating to a club statement and an independent disciplinary panel heard the case against Rangers at a Hampden hearing on Wednesday.

Rangers have now been found guilty of two breaches for ‘indicating bias or incompetence’ on the part of a match official and not ‘acting in the best interests’ of the game and been fined £5,000 and £1,000 respectively.

Further charges of 'bringing the game into disrepute' and 'observing the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship' were not proven, while a fifth issue, of failing to ensure that employees act within the rules, was withdrawn.

Rangers were hugely critical of the performance of Collum in the aftermath of the controversial second yellow card that was shown to Daniel Candeias in the Premiership win over St Mirren on Saturday, November 3, for 'gestures' made towards defender Anton Ferdinand.

An appeal on the grounds of mistaken identity was thrown out by the SFA and Rangers have since lobbied the Association for a change in the regulations that would allow second yellow cards to be overturned.

A Rangers spokesperson said: “We are pleased that the majority of charges raised against the Club have been dismissed.

“We remain convinced that the second yellow and red card issued to Daniel Candeias was mistaken and should have been rescinded. But it seems clear that for a red card issued after a second yellow to be rescinded in circumstances where an obvious refereeing error has occurred it will require a change to the rulebook. Rangers will be pressing for that change to be made and would hope that the Scottish FA would support this request.”
