When I was young and stupid I was always trying to drink as much or even more than all the other young and stupid and in general I did. But there was a difference between them and me. For example we could go out on a Friday night and drink ourselves into a jail bait stupor and next day they could resume where we had left off and do it all over again. I couldn't. I was always sick as a dug and to such an extent that I was still too messed up to go to work one Monday after one of these Friday night sessions. So, failed alcy. And in fact more than one of those young and stupid drinking partners did indeed progress to full blown alcy. I was drinking every day for 5 days last week (NOT the norm for me). Saturday I just couldn't face it - went to dinner with friends and refused any alcohol. I used to drink Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday day AND night, Sunday during the day - it was almost the norm back then, especially in our coal mining village that had little else to do. After Uni I "matured" but still am prone to getting hammered on occasion - always spontaneous and never good the following day, either by way of hangover or having to piece the previous evening together and wondering if I had made a tit of myself. One of the "crew" from the Thursday to Sunday sessions drank himself to death - passed away two years ago at just 43 years old. Another was told if he didn't stop he would be dead inside a year because he had basically killed off his liver. He was in his 30's when informed of this. Drink is a killer, of that there is no doubt.

It's just that my American wife doesn't drink and there isn't the same pub culture here. That's because you are in the boonies, not one of the major cities

There is a 'mega church' not too far away which requires cops to direct traffic when it's coming out. Drink is a killer, of that there is no doubt. I was never the type of person 'dying for a pint'. I could take it or leave it and I was taking it so much simply because all my friends were and how else can you do what you really want to do? Which is go out get some drinking bravado under the belt and chase women. Since the greatest gatherings of women were in the pubs and clubs that's where we went. I came from Hamilton where I suppose it could be said there were other things to do probably not available in a mining village but at the same time there were vastly more club and pub options than in a mining village. Done a lot of drugs too though not heroin. I would never take a needle to myself but done a lot of cocaine, LSD and decades of cannabis smoking which I was doing right up until I came to Oklahoma and never became addicted to any of these either. Some people just seem to be more susceptible to addiction and i'm not one of them. Though in saying that I have been smoking for decades. Oddly I could probably give that up too since when i'm forced to have no fags like on a long haul flight i'm not going crazy to have one when I reach the destination. I just enjoy it so much.

Growing up I used to have a real affection for this partly because it was relatively cheap meaning I could get more for my money and I did indeed like it. Think it might heave been peculiar to Scotland or maybe even Lanarkshire i'm not sure. Quote MB Original Scottish Chocolate Candy Bars x 3 approx a quarter of a pound (113g) weigh out bag of the ORIGINAL MB BARS - This is the Original Real Scottish made chocolate flavoured with a white fondant centre MB BARS and are sold as a slab bar which can be pulled into approx 4 good size pieces / chunks of these this tasty soft white sweet fondant covered in very creamy chocolate flavour candy coating over, these MB bars used to be known as a poor mans fry's bar as they are quite similar in looks and taste to the original fry's chocolate Bar. Don't be fooled by cheap imitations of MB bars that show up from time to time as there's only one original Scottish hand made MB bar and we stock it ! These original Scottish hand made MB bars are a rare find very hard to get old classic retro sweet, so don't be surprised when we sell out but we do get regular supplies as demand is high and they are a traditional hand made sweet that sells out very fast - always limited stock but if we run out we will inform our customers.

Bill 13,717
Alcohol, gambling, drugs, smoking, socialism. They’re just some of nature’s ways of winnowing out the weak and the stupid. Oh yes they are ?
