Lionel Messi’s Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus set to be shown for FREE to Scottish viewers on STV Player

ELEVEN SPORTS, who own the TV rights to Spanish and Italian football, have announced a partnership with STV that will see them broadcast live matches for free.

SCOTTISH viewers will have the chance to watch Atletico Madrid take on Barcelona this weekend as part of a new TV deal.

It will be just one of 14 live matches from La Liga and Serie A that will be shown live on the STV Player this weekend.

And every weekend thereafter, two live games from Spain and Italy will be shown live as part of a deal with ELEVEN SPORTS.

The streaming service stunned Sky Sports and BT Sport earlier this year when it snapped up the rights to Italian and Spanish football.

And now viewers in Scotland will also be able to enjoy the best of the games on offer free of charge.

This weekend, STV’s video on demand service STV Player will show tomorrow’s clash between Atletico Madrid and Lionel Messi’s Barcelona.

Other scheduled live games will feature the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Sevilla and Napoli.

Announcing the deal on STV’s website, ELEVEN SPORTS UK’s commercial director Richard Young admitted he was glad to see Spanish and Italian games reach Scottish viewers.

He said: “Our free-to-air partnership with STV fits perfectly into ELEVEN’s ‘For the Fans’ strategy which aims to make leading football action more accessible for fans at an affordable price.

“STV has fantastic reach across Scotland and this collaboration is another way to drive awareness of our premium football offer to new and diverse audiences.

“Following our free-to-air partnership with Facebook, our inventive methods of distribution ensure we continue to reach fans everywhere while strengthening Eleven Sports’ position as a pioneer in the contemporary sports media landscape.”

Richard Williams, STV’s managing director, digital, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Eleven Sports to bring our viewers free-to-air football featuring the likes of Messi and Ronaldo for the very first time on the STV Player.

“This partnership reinforces our commitment to be Scotland’s number one entertainment destination by offering a wider range of premium content to new audiences on the STV Player.”

Atletico Madrid take on Barcelona at 7.45pm tomorrow evening.
