Sky Sports beat BT Sport to land new five-year Scottish football TV deal worth £150million

The broadcasting giant blew rivals BT Sport out of the water with their package which SunSport exclusively revealed.

SKY SPORTS last night booted BT Sport off the park by grabbing the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership TV rights in a five-year deal worth a whopping £150 million.

SunSport revealed on November 8 they were set to claim the main package with an offer which blew BT Sport ‘out of the water.’

And both Sky Sports and SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster were last night crowing over their massive agreement which will kick in from the 2020-21 campaign, seeing the broadcaster screen up to 48 games a season plus the top flight play-offs.

For the next 18-months Sky Sports and BT Sport will continue to split the Premiership coverage.

But thereafter BT Sport’s much-lauded coverage of our game will totally DISAPPEAR — after it emerged they’ve also lost out to Premier Sports for the rights for the Betfred Cup.

Ultimately, their London-based chiefs didn’t value Scottish football enough with their end-of-October bids, especially for the Premiership which it’s understood fell WELL short of Sky Sports’ offer.

Added to the five-year Betfred Cup agreement, plus the SFA’s recently announced six-year Scottish Cup deal with BBC Scotland and Premier Sports’ worth £20m, there are TV riches coming into the game.

BBC Scotland have also wrapped a five-year contract which will include highlights of the Premiership, live coverage of the Ladbrokes Championship plus radio rights.

And — again from 2020 — BBC ALBA will continue to screen one deferred Premiership game on a Saturday night for three seasons, live IRN-BRU Cup coverage plus the lower league play-off finals.

Doncaster said: “I am delighted we’ve been able to secure an exclusive partnership with the UK’s leading sports broadcaster.

“This deal demonstrates Sky Sports’ commitment to showcasing the pinnacle of Scottish football.

“Every single deal is a major increase on our current contracts.

“Taken together, these deals represent the largest ever injection of broadcast investment since the SPL was founded more than 20 years ago.

“Interest in the Scottish game is extremely high at home and overseas.”

Premier Sports will exclusively show between 12 and 16 Betfred Cup live matches and highlights per season.

BBC Scotland has agreed a deal with the Scottish Professional Football League to extend its coverage of the Scottish Premiership and Championship to 2025.

Live television coverage of Championship games will begin early in the new year.

There is also an extension to existing radio coverage, as well as an enhanced digital offering and TV highlights.

"We are thrilled to extend our partnership with BBC Scotland," said SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

"They have been at the forefront of ensuring that fans of Scottish football are able to follow their teams throughout each season.

"The SPFL deal is a significant addition to BBC Scotland's existing sports portfolio which includes the enhanced Scottish Cup deal," Doncaster added.

The Championship matches will be broadcast live on BBC Scotland's new channel in a regular Friday night slot.

This will commence from this season, and cover next season, once the channel is officially launched.

Steve Carson, head of multi-platform commissioning at BBC Scotland, said he's "delighted" to have agreed the terms.

"We know there is a huge appetite for Scottish football amongst the audience and these deals will allow us to bring them more action than ever before from the top tiers of the game," he said.

"It's great news for fans of the Scottish game and we're looking forward to delivering a multi-platform package of high quality coverage across TV, radio and online."

What's included in the deal?

  • Up to 20 live matches from the Championship on television across seasons 18/19 and 19/20.
  • 160 live matches per season from the Scottish Premiership on BBC Radio Scotland to 2025
  • TV highlights will continue to be available across BBC free-to-air services until 2025
  • Includes the right to broadcast on the BBC's digital services

BBC ALBA will also broadcast one deferred Premiership match each Saturday evening, with live matches from the Irn-Bru Challenge Cup and the Championship / League One and League One / League Two play-off finals for three seasons from 2020/21.

Among other broadcast deals agreed by the SPFL, Sky Sports will broadcast up to 48 Premiership live matches per season, as well as up to six Premiership / Championship play-off matches, for five seasons from 2020/21.

Premier Sports will broadcast between 12 and 16 League Cup live matches and highlights per season.

Scottish football's new Sky Sports deal is worth a fraction of EFL's latest TV contract

The SPFL have agreed a new package with Sky but it still falls well short of the money being ploughed into the lower leagues in England.

The SPFL announced on Monday it had agreed a five-year deal, reported to be worth £160million, with the broadcasting giant from 2020.

The EFL also signed off on a deal worth an eye-watering £595m from the start of next season on Monday, a 35 per cent increase on their previous agreement.
