Thus far our record at Ibrox is much better this season but it must be pointed out that in those four games, we've only played only one team of note, Hearts. Tonight a second team of note visit and we really need the three points against an organised opponent with a track record of decent results in Glasgow.

Sun 07/10/18 PRE Rangers 3 - 1 Hearts

Against Hearts, those early goals helped. We really could do with the same tonight.

A post like this is just a waste of space.

I have just been catching up on this thread. Totally agree with Pete re Flanagan and although better than Hodson he is nowhere near the standard of Barasic. Flanagan gets skinned way to easy on a regular basis too.

Flanagan is an able fullback. With him in the starting line up, we can easily switch to three at the back (e.g. in games like tonight's) and allow Tav* to go forward and give us more manpower in midfield.

*Unless he is dropped.

Can't help but feel that SG's straight and direct answer regarding players required to step was partly aimed at Tav. Again, like in nigh all OF games last and this season, he has failed to perform - with Sunday another example of sub-standard free-kicks, shots and corners. That clearance attempt for their corner topped it all. I'm not saying that he's the worst performer, far from it. But in certain games you need leaders and performers and - people will be up in arms, I know - at times you wonder whether a more solid defender like Flanagan would be a better choice, as it also allows the right winger more time to stay up front.

Wallace is back in full training and in the galleries, you wonder what the story here is ...

The Importance of an Early Goal.

It allows the team and fans to 'relax' somewhat.

I'd imagine Tav will be given a chance to redeem himself.

SG talked of "a warning",..........up to the players now to go out and show they can respond.

Thing is this isn't only about attitude, it'll be about breaking down an organised derfence.

We really need to score in those first 10 frantic minutes before the game settles down.

I can understand the disappointment after Sunday but some of the reactions have been well OTT.

Yes, but the reallity is that's what would happen.

ps. an early goal for us at Ibrox usually has the bonus of forcing the opposition to rethink their gameplan and allowing us more space, which leads to goals (2,4,5,3).

It is the big problem or bone of contention this and last season. You have teams who actually play football and try to better you every other week, then you have teams like Accies, Killie and Co. who's game plan is to frustrate you with a packed defence and try to hit you on the counter or  via set pieces.

It seems we have players who can play at a certain decent level against European sides and those who give us space. But these same players do have difficulty openeing up these packed and physical defences. Same with MW's teams after the teams had sussed the 4-3-3 out, or PC's and Murty's, who IMHO lacked the quality.

That said, SG IMHO needs to swap tactics and formation instead of playing - MW-like - the same setup with more or less the same players no matter what opposition we face. Do we need 2 DMs against Killie? Or a full 4-man backline? We sure need 2 strikers though.

Tonight would be a game that could see us go 3-5-3 easily enough, even though Killie isat a "good run of form".

McGregor

Goldson - Worrall - Flanagan

Jack

Tavernier - Candeias -Kent - Grezda/Middleton

Lafferty - Morelos

Or leave Tav out and place Coulibaly or Ejariain central midfield, if the latter is fit.

When you look seperately at our H and A results, it becomes fairly apparent why there is such a difference, ie. the relative strength of the opposition.

If we can beat Kilmarnock tonight, it would strengthen the case for those who think that Ibrox is becoming 'a fortress'.

My critique of Flanagan is not a reaction from Sunday I have thought it for a few weeks now and Sunday just verified it for me. I was maybe a bit loose in saying he was slightly better defender than Hodson as Hodson was very poor at times but Flanagan leaves a lot to be desired. It may be unfair given that he is on the wrong wing but many attacking minded players prefer that so that they can cut inside  and shoot. l
