Bates Being Chased By Leicester, Arsenal & Bayern

Recommended Posts

Who is Leicester City, Arsenal and Bayern Munich 'target' David Bates?

Hamburg's Scottish defender is seemingly attracting plenty of interest.

David Bates was a virtual unknown south of the border until this week.

The Scottish defender only joined Hamburg in the summer, but such was his early season form that a host of Premier League clubs are now reported to want to sign him, including Leicester City.

Here, we take a look at the 22-year-old to see what he could offer if he comes to the King Power Stadium.

Early career

The central defender began his career with Raith Rovers before going out on loan to East Stirling and Brechin.

Glasgow giants Rangers soon took notice and signed him on loan in August 2016. The move was made permanent in January 2017 with Rangers giving him an 18-month deal.

A massive mistake by Rangers?

Bates, a Scotland Under-21 international, impressed when given his chance in the Rangers first team. With his contract running down he reportedly asked for a new deal worth £7,500 a week.

The club said no and Bates signed a four-year deal with Hamburg, who were relegated to Bundesliga 2 for the first time in their history at the end of last season.

Rangers likely only received a five figure development fee for the player.

Bates has made a flying start to his career in Germany with Hamburg keeping clean sheets in six of his eight appearances. Now Arsenal, Everton, Watford, Southampton and City are interested according to the Daily Record.

Bayern Munich are also said to be taking note.

What kind of player is he?

"He was a bit shaky when he first came into the team but then he seemed to have settled. He's quick, strong and aggressive," says former Rangers player Lee McCulloch.

Johannes Spors, Hamburg head of recruitment, said: “David brings in the combination of height, speed, mentality and accountability features for the defensive that the HSV will be good for sure.

“He is a down-to-earth guy who wants to actively develop his career and work hard for it.”

He was sent off last night (HSV won 1-0).  Two yellows, so a fair decision.

Hamburg seem to concede far less goals when he is playing.  He's a no nonsense defender.

Does anyone know if we put a sell-on clause in his contract?

People will probably differ in opinion, but constantly playing Bates and Martin in CD ahead of Alves and Cardoso was bound to cost us and did. Perhaps the latter needed time to adjust that wasn't there, but Murty sure liked it old-school British with imposing and physical CHs ... only that neither were of the standard demanded.

BTW, and despite what Bates said later on, it was him signing the contract with Hamburg in mid-season, he sure was not forced out or made to sign the contract at that stage. I reckon he was biting himself hard when hearing the news who our next manager was going to be. No hard feelings, but likewise we shouldn't dwell on him too much in the here and now.

Have you been drinking?

Was Russell Martin old-school British, imposing or physical?

Pretty sure Cardoso would be weak no matter how much time he was given.

We wouldn’t be able to as he left on freedom of contract
