Celtic: Record defeats in Barcelona, rare clean sheets and leaky defences

Four wins and just five clean sheets in 19 away games - Brendan Rodgers' European record as Celtic manager does not make for good reading.

The Scottish champions lost on their continental travels again on Thursday, haphazard defending costing them as RB Leipzig won 2-0 in the Europa League.

That has been a familiar flaw for Celtic under Rodgers, but what do the statistics say? And what do the pundits think?

LOW BAR

Celtic legend Chris Sutton slams Hoops’ performance as Andy Walker says they ‘looked out of their depth’ against RB Leipzig

Brendan Rodgers was forced to make changes to his side as they were left with a mountain to climb in their group after suffering a 2-0 defeat in Germany.

CHRIS SUTTON has slammed Celtic’s performance against RB Leipzig in the Europa League.

The former Hoops star claimed there are many ways to lose games and that last night’s effort wasn’t one of them.

Brendan Rodgers was forced to make several changes due to injuries as his team suffered a 2-0 defeat in Germany.

But Sutton reckons that there were still enough experienced players in the squad to put in an acceptable performance.

He tweeted: “I’m sorry changes or not there are ways to lose a game and that wasn’t one of them… RB Leipzig 2-0 Celtic.

“Average age Celtic 24.4… average age Leipzig 22.5… 7 full internationals plus £21.5million in transfer fees!

“The bar has been lowered if that’s acceptable.”

Former Celtic star Andy Walker was also scathing in his criticism of the Hoops’ performance.

The loss leaves with a mountain to climb in their group if they hope to reach the Europa League knockout stages.

And speaking on Sky Sports after the game, he claimed RB Leipzig could have scored as many as five goals and admitted Celtic looked out of their depth.

Walker said: “I thought they played well for the opening half hour, they looked comfortable in possession.

“But after they lost two goals in the space of five minutes, it was downhill from there on in.

“It could have been three, four, five, easily.

“I think the game in two weeks in Glasgow will determine whether Celtic have got a future in Europe beyond Christmas.

“It goes to a head-to-head. They’re now three points behind Leipzig, they’re six behind Salzburg, so it’s looking really difficult.

“It’s make or break in two weeks in Glasgow, this return game.

“They looked out of their depth tonight.

“Giving a chance to Morgan, which I think you’ve got to do given the amount of injuries, he didn’t look up to it.

“Christie didn’t look up to it. Kouassi, given that you’ve spent £3m on him, he showed absolutely nothing.

“Celtic have been found wanting in Europe and I thought this was their level, the Europa League.

“Last couple of years with Brendan Rodgers they’ve been in the Champions League, and that’s been great to generate the amount of money that that brings in.

“But they have looked out of their depth in the last couple of games.”
