ian1964 10,875
Ex-Celtic player to ‘sue club over historic sex abuse allegations’ The landmark case is due to go to court next May. A FORMER CELTIC player is to sue the club over historic sex abuse allegations, it’s been reported. The landmark case is due to go to court next May. And the ex-Hoops player alleges that his mental health was damaged by what happened. The Daily Mail reports court files state: “This action concerns a claim for damages for historic sexual abuse. “The pursuer has been diagnosed as suffering from mental ill health attributable to that abuse.” It’s believed that this marks the first time that a former player has sued the club over historic sex abuse claims. It will be heard in the All Scotland Personal Injury Court in Edinburgh. The Daily Mail reports that the court can award damages of up to £100,000. It’s reported that Celtic are contesting the claim. And it’s on the basis that Celtic Boys’ Club – where the abuse is alleged to have started – was a “separate and distinct” organisation. The club is yet to comment on the case. Celtic have been approached by the Scottish Sun for comment. We told you earlier this week how Celtic Boys Club founder Jim Torbett was jailed for a second time for sexually abusing young players. Torbett was locked up for six years after a judge said he used the football team as a “recruiting ground” to prey on boys. He targeted two teenagers including one who worshipped him as a “hero”. The 71 year-old also abused a five year-old boy at a trophy business Torbett once owned in Glasgow’s southside. The convicted beast faced the accusations at the High Court in Glasgow. https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/3455198/ex-celtic-player-sue-club-historic-sex-abuse-allegations/

If Celtic apologise or in some way offer empathy and sympathy for the plight of the victims; they are taking and admitting responsibility. Celtic chose a strategy three years past. They set about distancing the club from the Boys Club, waiting for it to whither. The disconnect achieved, a re-branded youth club under the name, 'St Patricks' was established. Concurrently, Gerry McCulloch was dispatched around the media outlets to conduct off the record briefings. Hence, phrases like 'Barrowfield Park' and emphasis on, 'East End locations', ................ etc. This week has seen a major fracturing of that particular PR line. They will have to establish something their supporters can get behind in terms of defence; however, they will not apologise or admit liability.

Expand Celtic lawyers would have been working on it a while for the reasons you state and probably have got it 'double legaled' to be sure. You'd imagine they'll take a hardline with any victims wanting to sue. Doubt they'll want a queue to form for out of court settlements. May be one to keep an eye on. It's fortunate for Celtic fans that they have so many court reporters to keep them abreast of any developments.
Bluedell 6,242
Celtic Football Club Statement By: Newsroom Staff on 07 Nov, 2018 12:45 FOLLOWING the conviction of Mr James Torbett at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Celtic Football Club wishes to express our deep regret that the incidents took place and sympathy for the victims who suffered abuse. We are grateful for the courage of those who have come forward to report abuse and to give evidence after such a long period of time. We have great respect for them and their families as they continue to cope with the distressing effects of the abuse they suffered. Allegations regarding abuse at Celtic Boys’ Club first emerged in the 1990s. Although Celtic Football Club is an entirely separate organisation, we have always taken these allegations extremely seriously because of our historic contacts with Celtic Boys’ Club. All investigations by the police and other inquiries were given our full support. We encouraged any individuals involved to report all information to the police so that matters could be investigated fully. Celtic Football Club continues to encourage any victim of abuse to report these crimes to the police. After the allegations became known in the 1990s, Celtic Football Club took steps to develop a new code of conduct and procedures to protect young people. Since then, Celtic Football Club has been at the leading edge of putting welfare and safeguarding protections in place for our young people. We were the first club in Scotland to appoint a safeguarding officer, developing policies for the protection of young people and monitoring and reviewing our procedures to ensure they continue to reflect best practice. The abuse of children is an issue affecting many areas of society, including a large number of football clubs, sports clubs, youth organisations, educational institutions and religious bodies across Britain. Celtic Football Club strongly believes that children and young people involved in football have the right to protection from all forms of harm and abuse and is committed to ensuring this and to promoting their wellbeing through continued cooperation with our children and young people, parents and carers and the relevant authorities.
Uilleam 6,564
Omerta No More!! Trappist Football Club finally breaks its silence, although I wonder why it bothered with such a mealy mouthed public statement. In layman's terms: it was terrible what was done, and we sympathise with the victims, but it was a big boy did it and then he ran away, and then he came back and did it again, but we didnae ken about any of that. Oh no. And what about these hundreds of other organisations where this kind of thing might have happened? Eh? Eh? Denial, duplicity, and deflection the watchwords since 1888.
